overview-iconUpper Mustang Trek Overview

The Upper Mustang trek package is an 18-day trip that is all about exploring hidden civilizations in the Upper Mustang Region of Nepal. With this trek package, you walk to some of the fascinating places like Lo Manthang, the ancient kingdom of the Mustang district, which is rich in ancient history and mountain civilization.

Likewise, a trip to the Upper Mustang area is an excellent way to learn about the ancient Buddhist kingdom that resembles Tibet. Besides, magnificent mountain views, the hike also offers attractions such as ancient caves, amazing monasteries, the Amchi Museum, colorful walls, and prayer flags.

The Upper Mustang itinerary starts from Kathmandu after you arrive at Kathmandu International Airport. However, the trekking days will only start from Jomsom. With Heaven Himalaya, the maximum elevation you reach on the trek is PA Pass, which lies between Tangbe and Chuusang at 4,210 m (13,812 ft).

How does the Upper Mustang Trek Package differ from other trekking packages?

The Upper Mustang Trek Package stands out from other travel destinations due to its unique characteristics.

Encompassing the northern half of the Mustang district close to the Tibetan border, it was once a forbidden kingdom within Nepal’s territory. Although modernization has influenced the area now, it still surprises visitors with its unique culture and traditions.

To preserve its ancient history and civilization, the local people have been actively rebuilding ancient monasteries and palaces, ensuring the region retains its ancient cultures and practices. So, you require a special permit to enter the area, unlike other travel destinations.

Upper Mustang is characterized by a vast expanse of dry land, yet full of life and immeasurable beauty. It receives minimal rainfall, making it one of the driest regions in Nepal. However, the fascinating mountain rivers flowing from the mountains provide sustenance to this arid landscape, making it one of the best monsoon treks in Nepal.

Geographically and culturally, Upper Mustang shares similarities with Tibet and Mustang. The walled city of Lo Manthang was a part of the Tibetan plateau until the 1830s and Tibetan culture and traditions still prevail in the region.

The inhabitants, known as Lobas, are of Tibetan descent, further enhancing the area’s connection to Tibet.

Trekking in Upper Mustang provides a similar experience to trekking in Tibet, too, making it an ideal choice for those who appreciate mystery and ancient culture. If you love exploring unique destinations rich in history and culture, then the Upper Mustang trek package is the right choice.

Why should you take a travel package to Upper Mustang?

The Upper Mustang Trek in Nepal presents the rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional mountain way of life. The region’s geographical and political isolation has been instrumental in preserving its distinct culture, unexploited natural landscapes, and ancient monasteries dating back centuries.

Encountering medieval relics, colorful prayer flags, and locals traveling on horseback provides a stark contrast to modern society. Interacting with some of the oldest mountain tribe families in Mustang allows for sharing myths and stories, offering insight into their way of life.

The never-ending bond between the people and the mountains is awe-inspiring. Exploring the royal palace, beautiful old monasteries, and the local school in the Upper Mustang reveals a rich history.

Undoubtedly, Upper Mustang has a unique beauty and allure unmatched by other trekking destinations in Nepal, making it a rare gem for those seeking mystery and mythical narratives.

Besides, it unfolds up-close views of magnificent mountains such as Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Annapurna (8,091m), and Nilgiri Himal (7,061m). The enchanting village walks, mysterious caves, intricate carvings, and ancient monasteries further enhance the trekking experience.

For those preferring a more leisurely journey, there’s an option for a luxurious jeep ride to Upper Mustang instead of walking.

Moreover, Upper Mustang is famous for the Tiji festival held in May or June. If you decide to visit the area during this time, then you can extend your Mustang trekking itinerary to participate in the festival’s unique rituals. However, you can also book a separate trek, the Mustang Tiji Festival Trek, to fully immerse yourself in the festivities.

Pashupatinath Temple: Explore this sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the banks of the Bagmati River. Observe the temple’s architecture and witness the Hindu cremation rituals performed along the riverbanks.

Boudhanath Stupa: Next, head to one of the largest stupas in Nepal. Take in the serene atmosphere as you walk around the stupa and observe Buddhist rituals.

Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple): Visit this ancient religious complex situated atop a hill. Enjoy panoramic views of the city and observe the playful monkeys that inhabit the area.

Kathmandu Durbar Square: Conclude your sightseeing tour with a visit to this historic square, which is home to several palaces, temples, and courtyards dating back to the medieval period of Nepalese history.

Anything left out can be purchased or rented in the Thamel area.

Finally, enjoy a traditional Nepali dinner and get a good night’s sleep to recharge for the days ahead.

Today you embark on a journey to Pokhara, the exquisite lake city and the gateway to various trekking routes in the Annapurna region. The drive takes you along the scenic Prithivi Highway, where you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of lush green hills and the serene Trishuli River.

As you travel, you’ll pass through bustling bazaars like Damauli, Muglin, and Malekhu and witness the cable car ascending to the revered Hindu temple of Mankamana at Kurintar.

The road journey may be a bit bumpy at times, with occasional stops due to ongoing road construction along the highway, adding an adventurous element to the experience.

Upon your arrival at Pokhara, you’ll check into the hotel and have some time to freshen up. Take a stroll around the lakeside area, soaking in the tranquil ambiance. Enjoy a delicious dinner and retire early to bed, as an early morning flight to Jomsom awaits you tomorrow.

Overnight stay in Pokhara.

Today, you’ll rise early for breakfast at the hotel. Afterward, you’ll pack your daypack and hand your duffle bag to the porter.

Your trek guide will take you to Pokhara airport for a quick flight to Jomsom, the main town in the Mustang district. The flight offers stunning vistas of the deepest gorge in the world, that lies between two massive mountains of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. During this brief journey, you’ll marvel at the lush green hills and snowy peaks.

Upon arrival in Jomsom, your Upper Mustang trek begins. You’ll walk uphill alongside the bank of Kali Gandaki River for about 3 hours until you reach Kagbeni. This village holds historical significance as it once served as a key stop along the Salt Trade Route between Nepal and Tibet.

Overnight stay in Kagbeni.

After a good breakfast, say goodbye to Kagbeni and start your trek. You’ll climb a steep hill on the east side of the river. As you walk, you’ll see the big Kali Gandaki river. The mountains like Nilgiri North, Tilicho Peak, and Nilgiri Central will wow you.

En route, you pass through Tangbe, a lovely village. You’ll see lush green fields along the Kali Gandaki river, along with apple orchards, and fields of barley and buckwheat. Additionally, you’ll be treated to the sight of magnificent chortens (Buddhist shrines) and burial caves in the cliffs.

Continuing a bit further north from Tangbe, you reach Chhusang, where you can stop for lunch. Chhusang is known as one of the five settlements in the area where the Gurung culture is dominant.

After your lunch break, keep walking across the dry Narsin Khola (river). Then, prepare for a steep climb before reaching Chele village, situated atop a hill. From there, you’ll enjoy a nice view of the river flowing down to Chhusang and the Annapurna peaks in the distance.

Overnight stay in Chele.

Leaving Chele village behind, you’ll make your way towards Syangboche village. After walking for a while, you’ll come to a long suspension bridge hanging over the canyon, leading you to Ghyakar village nestled on a plateau.

From Ghyakar, the trail gradually climbs on a dirt track. As you proceed, the wide valley opens up before you, offering impressive scenery but little shelter from the sun’s heat, which may tire you out. Continuing your hike, you’ll pass through two small passes en route. The first is Taklam La, sitting at an altitude of 3,675 meters, followed by Dajori La at 3,735 meters.

Once you have crossed these passes, the trail becomes easier, allowing for a leisurely walk to Samar. Here you’ll encounter magnificent three-colored chortens and long mani walls.

Between Samar and Syangboche, there is an off-road trail via Chungsi (Runchung) cave. After exploring the cave, you’ll again descend into a steep valley and continue walking on flat terrain until you arrive in Syangboche.

Overnight stay at Syangboche.

After departing from Syangboche, the trail takes a descent to cross the Tama Khola River before gradually ascending to Tama Gaon (3,710m).  From Tama Gaon, you’ll follow a “Nepal flat” to Jhaite.

Leaving Jhaite, the path becomes steeper as you head towards the Nyi La Pass at 4,010 meters. From this pass, you’ll be treated to spectacular views, gazing back at Jhaite and Tama Gaon while also catching sight of Ghiling to the east.

Descending from Nyi La Pass, you’ll enjoy an easy downhill walk mostly along a jeep road to Ghami.

Ghami is one of the largest villages in Upper Mustang after Lo Manthang and Tsarang.  It has few lodges and is surrounded by trees and fields.

In the center of the village, you’ll find a nice prayer wall and colorful chortens, alongside taps where locals fetch water. Just outside the village, you can admire the longest mani wall in Mustang, stretching for 305 meters.

Overnight stay in Ghami.

After breakfast, you set off on your journey through Ghami, descending to the Ghami River. After crossing it, you start the climb towards the longest mani wall in Mustang. Along the way, you’ll pass by some chortens marking the entrance to Dhakmar Valley.

Continuing,  you’ll eventually reach the base of the Tsarang La Pass. This part of the Ghami and Tsarang trekking route is challenging due to the rugged landscapes.

Tsarang La Pass lies at 3,870 meters offering impressive views of layered hills and mountains, sharp cliffs, deep canyons, and wide plateaus.

Tsarang, the second largest settlement in Upper Mustang after Lo Manthang, was once the capital, and the King’s Palace still stands tall. Here you have the opportunity to visit the 16th-century Thubten Shedrup Dhagyeling Monastery, which consists of a red building in the center surrounded by striped walls.

Overnight stay in Charang.

In the early morning, you indulge in a simple breakfast of Tibetan bread and omelet before embarking on your journey to Lo-Manthang. Setting off, you follow the trail down to the Tsarang River, passing by gorgeous chortens adorning the path.

After about an hour of walking, you’ll come across Sungda Chorten, one of the largest Chortens in Upper Mustang. Situated on an island amidst the sandy road, this monastery is the focal point of the barren landscapes.

As you traverse through the Upper Mustang route, the view of cliffside caves and distant mountains accompanies you throughout the trek.

Before reaching Lo Manthang, you ascend to the Lo La Pass at 3,960 meters, the highest point on the route from Charang to Lo-Manthang. From this windy pass, you catch a glimpse of Lo-Manthang, an incredibly beautiful walled capital. Moreover, you get the stunning mountain views of Annapurna I, Nilgiri, Bhrikuti, and Tilicho Peak.

Descending from the pass, you follow a dusty path until finally arriving at Lo-Manthang, renowned as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Overnight stay in Lo-Manthang.

On this day allocated for exploring Lo-Manthang as per your Upper Mustang trek itinerary, you have various options to choose from. One option is to trek to Chooser village, where you can visit Jhong Caves and Nyphu Gompa.

This hiking trail to Chooser is incredibly scenic, passing through a wide valley filled with patchwork fields, small villages, and colorful sandy mountains.

At Jhong Cave, you’ll be treated to a commanding view of the area from its windows, and inside the cave, you’ll discover ancient pottery. Nyphu Gompa is another interesting landmark to see, built into the rugged cliffside.

If you have extra days to spend in Lo Manthang, you have more options for exploration. You can visit ancient monasteries built in the 14th or 16th century like Chode Gompa, Jampa Gompa, and Thupchen Gompa, each offering unique insights into the region’s religious and cultural heritage.

Apart from monasteries, you can explore the winding lanes of Lo-Manthang itself. Here you’ll encounter friendly locals eager to share their stories and traditions, providing you with a deeper understanding of their well-preserved culture. Keep an eye out for women dressed in traditional clothing and accessories, adding to the rich tapestry of this ancient city.

Overnight stay in Lo-Manthang.

Saying a final goodbye to the mystical valley of Lo-Manthang, you’ll descend from the new south-facing gate and cross the Dokpolo Khola.

At this point, there is the western route which leads to Chogo La (4,300m) before descending to Ghar Gompa (3,930m) and Dhakmar (3,810m). But, you’ll take a classic route to Charang by climbing the hill to the south and following the road trail.

The trek route will bless you with the jaw-dropping sights of jagged cliffs, rolling plateaus, and rippling ridges. Finally, after enjoying the scenery, you head down from the ridge and make your way toward Charang. Upon arrival in Charang, take a well-deserved rest and explore the village.

Overnight stay in Charang.

Departing from Charang, you trek along a winding path that leads you down to the Dhechaeng River, originating from Damodar Kunda. Along the way, you enjoy the captivating sights of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri Himalayas.

After crossing Dhe Khola, you’ll take an uphill climb leading to the top of the ridge. From this vantage point, you get to see amazing views of the river, grazing yaks, and panoramic vistas of hills, rocky cliffs, and mountains.

Continuing your descent for about an hour, you arrive at a flat trail where you can witness several hundreds of old sandy cliffs along the route.

Finally, you arrive in Tangbe, which lies en route to or from Chuusang. This picturesque village, situated along the bank of the Kali Gandaki River, is full of cultivated fields and apple orchards.

Throughout the village, you’ll find numerous ancient chortens, old buildings, and narrow cobbled lanes. The magnificent mountain views add to the charm of this village.

Overnight stay in Tangbe.

Today you’ll leave the charming village of Tangbe and head towards Tetang. You’ll embark on a very remote trail, devoid of villages, tea houses, or any settlements, making it a long trekking route where you’ll need to pack your lunch. This day’s trek will be longer compared to others.

Starting from Tangbe, you’ll ascend the steps and follow the trail to the riverside, crossing a suspension bridge to reach the opposite side of the river. Continuing, the path will lead you to Yak Khola and climb a terraced hill to reach PA pass (4,210m), the highest point of the Upper Mustang trek.

From the summit of this pass, you’ll witness the panoramic mountain vistas including Damodar and Saribung Himal. Afterward, hiking through rough terrain, you finally arrive in Tetang.

Overnight stay in Tetang.

Today, you’ll trek to Muktinath Valley, home to a holy temple at the base of Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the famous Annapurna Circuit. The main highlight of today’s trek is crossing the Gyu La Pass, which stands at an altitude of 4,077 meters above sea level.

You’ll traverse an uphill and downhill trail through a cold, arid desert landscape. Along the way, you’ll encounter several yak sheds and Kharkas. En route, you’ll come across the picturesque settlement of Chennkar, offering breathtaking vistas and unique cultural insight.

As you savor the arid desert landscapes and catch sight of mountains such as Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche, and others, you’ll arrive in Muktinath Valley. This valley is home to the sacred Muktinath temple, the most revered site for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims from around the world.

Overnight stay in Muktinath.

Wake up early and visit the sacred Muktinath Temple. Explore its complex, including 108 water spouts, and visit Jwala Mai Temple or Dhola Mebar Gompa, where you can see the eternal flame fueled by natural gas. Witness the newly constructed 35-foot-tall stone Buddha Statue as well.

After exploring Muktinath temple and its surroundings, return to the tea house for breakfast. Then, begin trekking towards Jomsom town. En route, pass through two charming Thakali villages, Ranipauwa and Jharkot.

Later, arrive at the small hamlet of Lurpa, where you can explore a Bonpo Busshist cave monastery. Enjoy the majestic mountain vistas, including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche, and many surrounding peaks.

Finally, after a couple of hours of hiking, reach Jomsom, which is full of tourist spots and several souvenir shops.

Overnight stay in Jomsom.

In the early morning, you enjoy a mesmerizing sunrise over the Dhaulagiri Massif ranges before quickly grabbing breakfast and boarding a flight to Pokhara. This scenic journey treats you to a remarkable panorama of mountains, valleys, and lakes.

After arriving at Pokhara, you have the opportunity to explore this picturesque city of lakes and visit its major landmarks. Pokhara, renowned as one of Nepal’s premier tourist destinations, boasts several points of interest. These include Devis Falls, Gupteshwor Cave, Mahendra Cave, the International Mountain Museum, World Peace Stupa, Barahi Temple, and Phewa Lake.

Later in the evening, you can unwind at the lakeside area of Phewa Lake, enjoying its serene atmosphere and spectacular mountain views. The lush green hills reflecting on the lake's surface add to the charm. For those seeking nightlife experiences, there are many cafes, hotels, bars, restaurants, and pubs offering live music entertainment.

Overnight stay in Pokhara.

Early in the morning, you’ll start your day with a hearty breakfast, savoring the marvelous mountain views. Afterward, you’ll head to the airport for a domestic flight to Kathmandu, where you’ll be treated to alluring vistas of mountains, lush valleys, and serene lakes.

For a total glance at what it requires to travel to Upper Mustang, see our recommended packing list.

A typical day on the Upper Mustang begins around 6 am with waking up amidst the Himalayas. After freshening up, dressing up, and packing your bags you give your packed duffle bag to your porter and prepare your daypack with essentials like extra clothes, medicines, water bottles and snacks.

Breakfast is usually served around 7 am at the tea houses, where the meal is heavy enough to sustain you for the next couple of hours of trekking before lunch. After breakfast, the hiking begins, preceded by a 5-minute stretching and warming session.

After walking for about an hour, there is a brief 4 to 5 minutes rest along the way where you can drink water or go to the bathroom. Lunchtime usually falls within a two to three-hour walking distance, where you stop at a tea house for a one-hour break.

After lunch and some relaxation, the trek continues with ample opportunities to take short breaks to admire the scenery. After a couple of hours, a brief half-hour tea break is taken.

Upon reaching the next tea house, you can take a brief rest, shower, and have a light snack with tea or coffee. If time permits, a short walk through the village to appreciate the landscape and surroundings is an option.

Before dinner, there is time to chat with fellow trekkers about the day’s experience. Following dinner in a warm dining hall, your trek guide will brief you on the next day’s itinerary.

Before bedtime, ensure your breakfast preferences are communicated to the guide for the next morning. Finally, it’s time to retire for a well-deserved rest before starting all over again the next day.

The Upper Mustang trek covers approximately 125 to 130 km (78 to 80 miles), requiring approximately 5 to 6 hours of walking per day for 12 days. The trek starts in Jomsom, leads to Lo-Manthang, and ends back in Jomsom through Muktinath.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you’ll find a variety of hotels ranging from standard to luxurious five-star options.

However, as you enter into the Upper Mustang trekking region, accommodation primarily consists of local lodges and tea houses. While these lodgings lack the luxury of city hotels, they are clean, hygienic, and comfortable enough for resting, relaxing, and sleeping during the trekking journey.

The tea houses feature clean and comfortable rooms with basic facilities. Each tea house has a central communal area with a large stove that provides heat and a warm atmosphere.

Bedrooms in these tea houses are usually unheated and furnished with twin beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. But during extremely cold temperatures, a blanket may not suffice, so it’s advisable to bring a sleeping bag (a 3-season bag is adequate).

While accommodation is basic, the stunning landscapes, unique culture, and warm hospitality of the Hidden kingdom of Lo ensure a memorable trekking experience.

It’s worth noting that Upper Mustang accommodation costs are relatively high due to factors such as low population density, expensive transportation, and the region’s isolation.

Additionally, if you plan to trek during early spring like March, ensure your accommodation is booked in advance. Many settlements relocated to the city during this time to escape winter, resulting in the closure of most tea houses, especially those in places like Lo Manthang.

The Upper Mustang trek is considered moderately challenging, falling between the easy and more strenuous treks in Nepal. While it doesn’t include technical sections, it encompasses long days of hiking on rugged and rocky terrain with steep ascents and descents.

With the highest point of the trek exceeding 4,000 meters, there is an increased risk of altitude sickness. Therefore, a good level of fitness and determination are required to complete this trek.

It’s advisable to start preparation training at least two to three months before the trek, focusing on cardiovascular exercises and strength endurance training.

Recommended exercises include running, cycling, swimming, or hiking, along with workouts targeting leg strength and core muscles.

Additionally, mental preparation is crucial due to challenges such as unpredictable weather, remote terrain, and limited amenities. Strong determination and perseverance are necessary to overcome these challenges and complete the trek.

The Upper Mustang trek is best experienced during three distinct seasons: spring (March to May), summer (June to August), and autumn (September to November). This region differs from other trekking areas in Nepal due to its location in the rainshadow area behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif, resulting in less rainfall even during the monsoon season.

Spring Season (March-April-May)

Spring is considered the best time for the Upper Mustang, offering stable weather conditions and pleasant temperatures. With daytime temperatures ranging from -6 to -2°C, it provides ideal trekking conditions.

During this season, trekkers can enjoy clear sights of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Moreover, spring coincides with Tiji, the main festival of Lo Manthang, adding cultural richness to the trekking experience.

Summer Season (June-July-August)

Despite being monsoon season in other parts of Nepal, summer in the Upper Mustang region experiences significantly less rainfall due to its rain shadow location behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif. Daytime temperatures range from 20 to 33°C,  while nighttime temperatures range from -3 to 0°C.

The trail comes alive with blooming flowers and lush greenery, creating a picturesque backdrop for trekkers. The summer months include the Yartung (horse racing festival) in August, offering a unique cultural experience.

However, while the monsoon impacts other parts of Nepal, including Pokhara, it may lead to occasional delays or cancellations of domestic flights. Further, rain in the lower trekking region can make the trail slippery and increase the risk of landslides. It’s worth noting that from Kagbeni to Jomsom, the impact of monsoon rainfall is minimal.

Autumn Season (September-October-November)

Autumn is characterized by stable and dry weather conditions, making it an ideal time for trekking in the Upper Mustang.

With daytime temperatures ranging from 12 to 20°C and clear skies, trekkers can enjoy excellent visibility of the surrounding landscape. Nighttime where temperatures hover around -6 to -2°C, providing cool and comfortable conditions for resting after a day of trekking.

October and November, in particular, are the best trekking months for the Upper Mustang trek. During these months, it is possible to cross high mountain passes.

Winter Season (December-January-February)

The winter season is not recommended for the Upper Mustang trek. While technically possible, trekking during this time can be challenging due to deep snow at high altitudes.

Moreover, many locals leave the region to avoid the cold weather, resulting in several tea houses and facilities along the route being closed. This can make trekking even more challenging.

Additionally, the harsh temperatures pose significant challenges, with daytime temperatures ranging from 0 to 5°C and night temperatures from -25 to -20°C. Proper trekking gear is essential, and arrangements for accommodation should be made in advance.

For the Upper Mustang trek, each person requires two specific permits. Here are the details:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP):

  • A guide is mandatory, and there must be a minimum of two trekkers to obtain this permit.
  • The RAP costs USD 500 per person for the first 10 days and USD 50 per person for each subsequent day.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP):

  • For foreign nationals:  USD 23 or NPR 3,000
  • For SAARC nationals: USD 8 or NPR 1,000

Keynote: A TIMS card is not required for the Upper Mustang trek. However, if you plan to extend your trek to other regions, a TIMS card may be necessary.

Phone and internet connectivity in Upper Mustang is generally poor. Wi-Fi availability in tea houses is limited, and when available, it’s often provided through expensive satellite connections that are unreliable. Additionally, there are fees associated with using this Wi-Fi service.

Local SIM cards and packages can be obtained at the airport or from several vendors in Kathmandu or Pokhara. While data connections work well in cities, they are limited and slow once you leave the coverage area. Both NTC and NCELL may offer some data connection in Upper Mustang, but expect it to be limited and slow.

In the Upper Mustang region, electricity availability varies due to its remote location. Settlements at lower altitudes like Samar, Ghiling, Syangboche, and Ghami have electricity, but it’s not always reliable.

Most towns, particularly at high elevations, rely on solar power as a backup for the needs of trekkers. However, power cuts are common, and electricity may not be available at higher elevations.

Solar panels are used to generate electricity in some places like Kagbeni and Lo-Manthang, but they can be unreliable during bad weather. So, it is best to bring a solar power bank to charge your devices.

Further, tea houses typically allocate specific time for power usage, usually in the evening, where you can charge your electronic devices at a small cost.  Using solar banks can be a cost-effective and reliable solution for charging your devices during the Mustang trek.

Moreover, the tea houses in the Upper Mustang region provide two or three plug outlets with supporting plug types C, D, or M. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. Therefore, it’s important to bring a universal adapter and voltage converter if necessary.

In the Upper Mustang trekking region, despite its arid nature and limited water sources, safe drinking water is readily available at every tea house.

They offer boiled water for a nominal fee of about USD 1 to 2 per liter, ensuring its safety for consumption. Boiled water is also used for making drinks like tea and coffee, as well as for cooking.

Additionally, mineral bottled water is an option, albeit at a higher cost, especially at higher elevations where prices can reach up to USD 3 per liter. However, to minimize expenses and environmental impact, many trekkers opt to refill their water bottles at teahouses.

Furthermore, in the villages, communal water taps are available, but it’s essential to purify or boil the water before drinking. Therefore, carrying a water purification system or tablets is advisable. Whether you’re relying on boiled water or natural resources, bringing your refillable water bottle ensures you have access to safe drinking water throughout the trek.

Along the Upper Mustang trail, you’ll discover a diverse range of delicious food options, a mix of  Nepali, Tibetan, and a bit of Western cuisine.

For breakfast, you can enjoy a variety of items including oats, cornflakes, muesli with milk, oats porridge, toasted bread, french toast, various egg dishes (omelet, boiled, and scrambled) pancakes, and Tibetan bread.

Dal Bhat, a hearty meal consisting of steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, pickle, and papad, is a common lunch and dinner option, providing ample energy for trekking. Non-vegetarian alternatives like chicken curry or yak meat are also available.

The trekking trail of Upper Mustang is not commercialized, so you’ll often savor fresh, locally-grown organic vegetables.

In addition to Dal Bhat, there are Western options like pizza, sandwiches, momo (dumplings), pasta, spaghetti, mashed potato, fried rice, fried vegetables, veg salad, etc.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks, beer, local drinks, and juices are easily available at the tea houses along the Upper Mustang trek route. Various soup items including fresh vegetable soup, chicken soup, garlic soup, and tomato soup are also offered.

While there’s plenty to enjoy, it’s wise to carry snacks like chocolates, nuts, dry fruits, energy bars, and other nutritional foodstuffs during the Upper Mustang trek.

Only a few tea houses along the trekking route have attached bathrooms, while the majority have communal toilets or bathrooms.

Most of these facilities feature squat-style toilets with manual flushing systems. It is advisable to carry toilet paper and pocket soap as they may not be provided in every tea house. In places like Muktinath and Jomsom, some tea houses may offer Western-style toilets and some tea houses might have attached bathrooms where hot showers are available.

However, in the majority of hotels and tea houses, showers are located in separate rooms, usually adjacent to the toilet area. While cold water showers are typically free, there is usually a charge of USD 2 to 5 for a hot shower, depending on availability.

Solar-heated showers are common but may not consistently provide hot showers, while gas showers are available at a higher cost. The price of hot showers varies among tea houses and trekking altitudes in the Upper Mustang region.

But for a hot shower, you need to pay USD 2 to 5 if available. Solar heated showers are common but they might not be reliably hot. Gas showers are also available but it costs you more. The charge of hot showers in the Upper Mustang region depends from one tea house to another.

Bad Weather Conditions

Weather surprises are common on the Upper Mustang trek. Sometimes you might encounter heavy snow, or strong winds, particularly at high altitudes. This can make the trail slippery, and visibility poor, increasing the risk of accidents and discomfort.

Respond:

Make sure to check the weather forecast before you start your trek and be prepared with appropriate gear like waterproof clothing, and sturdy hiking boots. During bad weather, it’s best to stay in a safe place rather than getting caught in a snowstorm on the trail.

Altitude sickness

As you climb higher into the mountains, the air gets thinner, and altitude sickness becomes a real concern. Symptoms can range from headaches and nausea to more serious conditions like pulmonary and cerebral edema.

Respond:

To prevent altitude sickness, it’s important to acclimatize properly by taking it slow and allowing your body time to adjust to the higher altitude. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and consider taking medication like Diamox if recommended by your doctor. Descend lower elevation immediately if you start experiencing any symptoms of altitude sickness.

Getting Lost on the Trail

The trail in Upper Mustang can be rugged and remote and sometimes there aren’t any signs to show you where to go. This means it’s easy to take a wrong turn and find yourself off track, especially if visibility is poor due to weather conditions.

Respond:

Before you start trekking, make sure you have a good map and a GPS or smartphone with a map app that takes the world offline. Stick to the paths that have signs whenever you can. If you’re not sure where to go, ask the people who live there or other trekkers for help. Always listen to your guide who knows the areas very well and helps you stay on track.

Porters are available to carry your luggage in a duffle bag provided by Heaven Himalaya. You should carry a daypack for items you’ll need during the trek.

While your luggage is carried by a porter, be mindful of the weight limit of 10 to 12 kg per trekker. If your luggage exceeds this weight limit, an additional porter can be arranged for extra cost.

If you have extra luggage from traveling to Nepal, you can store it at the Kathmandu hotel. This helps manage your luggage weight and trek more comfortably without extra weight.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, there are plenty of legitimate places for currency exchange, with better rates typically available in Kathmandu. Both cities have several ATMs for cash withdrawals.

However, along the Upper Mustang trail, there are limited ATMs and banks. While places like Jomsom and Muktinath have some banks and ATMs, they might not be as reliable as those in cities.

On the Upper Mustang trail, transactions are in cash using Nepali Rupees (NPR). It’s advisable to withdraw enough money needed for the trekking before starting.

Furthermore, remember to carry a small denomination note as change may not always be readily available, especially in remote places.

Getting the right travel insurance for your Upper Mustang Trek is essential. Note that not all policies cover trekking at high altitudes. So, ensure your policy covers trekking up to 4,500 meters. The highest point of the trek, PA at 4,210 meters, must be within this insurance coverage.

Moreover, your travel insurance must cover all medical, travel, and trekking issues, especially since accidents can happen unexpectedly on the trail.

Your policies must include coverage for high-altitude, emergency evacuation by helicopter, medical expenses if you get sick or hurt, compensation for trip cancellations or delays, protection against losing or having your baggage stolen, and help with returning home if needed.

Before starting the Upper Mustang trek, you’ll need to arrange flight tickets to Nepal, pay for your visa, get a local SIM card, buy trekking gear and equipment, and purchase travel insurance. All these services are not included in your Upper Mustang trek package cost.

Any additional food or drinks beyond what’s included in your trekking package will cost you extra during the trek. Similarly, if you opt for extra amenities at tea houses like hot showers, Wi-Fi, or charging for electronic devices, you’ll need to pay extra.

After completing the trek, it is customary to provide tips to guides and porters as a gratitude. If you plan to buy souvenirs to take home, you’ll need to budget extra for this.

Fantastic Upper Mustang

We just got back from the Upper Mustang trekking trip organized by Heaven Himalaya. And this was by far one of the best mountain culture tours we have ever been to. The scenery, the little mountain people, Lo Manthang, Mani walls, prayers flags, food everything reminds me of the place again and again. Although the permit is very expensive, Upper Mustang is the most-visit destination in Nepal.

Had a Delightful Experience

All thanks to Mr. Ram for organizing the Upper Mustang hike, trekking perfectly from beginning to end. I, along with my bunch of friends, had a delightful experience with the Heaven Himalaya team. For us, it is the best trekking agency in Nepal. The guides and porters were very flexible and took care of everything around us. I recommend everyone to try these young guys to go hiking in Nepal.

Great Upper Mustang Trip

We hiked to the Upper Mustang with Heaven Himalaya. Ram was very helpful in setting everything required for the trek. He responded quickly and was there to welcome us to the airport, too. The guide and porter both were amazing. We had a little extra luggage, but the porter didn’t complain. Thank you, Mr. Ram, guide, and our hero porters for making our tour amazing. Best of luck to the entire team of Heaven Himalaya. I will again travel to Nepal with my daughter after a few years.

Wonderful Trekking Experience

My wife and I visited Upper Mustang and were lucky to have chosen Heaven Himalaya. We had a wonderful experience trekking in Upper Mustang. As soon as we landed in TIA, we were welcomed by Ram. He was very easy and responsive to work with. He explained all the queries we had and gave a brief description of the tour. As we were watching videos and reading blogs about Upper Mustang, we had a lot of expectations about the place and the trekking agency we were working with. We had a private 18-day tour with a porter. And to be honest, we found everything beyond our expectations. The hills, mountains, monasteries were all amazing, especially Lo Manthang is a great place to visit. Our guide was also equally supportive and friendly. The team made our trek more enjoyable. While writing this, it reminded me of the days we had on the trails. Thank You again for the wonderful experience. Best wishes to Jason and Esha. We will definitely love to return and probably do the Everest base camp Trek this time.
