Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Itinerary

The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour starts with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. From Jomsom, we take a jeep ride that will take us to Lo Manthang. Before heading to Lo Manthang, we visit Muktinath. It is a popular pilgrimage site that offers some captivating views of mountains in the Annapurna range. It is a temple of Lord Vishnu in a dramatic location with 108 waterspouts. Also, there is a monastery near the shrine. Each year, the place receives large numbers of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims.

From Muktinath, the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour proceeds with a drive towards Upper Mustang, i.e., Lo Manthang. Our luxury ride passes through Barron Gorge, dry landscapes, beautiful cliffs, and different high passes on the way to Lo Manthang. Then, the route follows famous places like Kagbeni, Kaligandaki Gorge, Chele, Ghami, and Tsarang on the road. You will also see stunning views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna massif in the backdrop.

At last, the Jeep Safari to Upper Mustang takes us to the ancient city of Lo Manthang, the capital of the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. Also regarded as the capital of the Forbidden Kingdom, it is a city full of ancient history, culture, and traditions. Even today, the town has a four-story palace with the king and queen living in it.

The capital has a long-walled fortress and many ancient Gompas that date back centuries. If your visit falls during June or May, you might also want to take part in the 3-day TiJi festival. Best Time for Jeep Safari Tour to Upper Mustang

Tour to Upper Mustang is favorable in every season in Nepal. One can drive to the region during monsoon too. However, summer is the season of rain, and Upper Mustang receives less amount of rainfall. It is a semi-deserted area. The place lies in the shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, which prevents Mustang from getting wet. Hence, Upper Mustang can be the best place to travel in Nepal during the summer, too.

Further, to minimize potential problems, the autumn and spring season is recommended for international tourists. These are the favorite seasons of every traveler that travels to Nepal. Weather and the climate of the Upper Mustang during autumn and spring are typical and offer obstructed mountain views.

Permits to visit Upper Mustang in a Jeep

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)

  • TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management Systems)

Nepal’s government only opened this region to international tourists in 1992. Still, foreigners require a special permit (RAP) to enter the sector. People of Upper Mustang live a typical mountain life and have a unique border rule for getting into the area. The Department of Immigration issues permits for Upper Mustang to tourists. It does not grant single licenses; we need at least two people to get the permit. On the off chance that you are a solo traveler, please let us know. We will join you with other travel groups.

Your Jeep tour journey starts from Kagbeni, where police check your permits.

Would you not prefer to investigate the off-beaten path to the Hidden Kingdom? You ought not to miss this opportunity to explore the semi-deserted area of the Upper Mustang using a Jeep. Book your Mustang tour now.

    Heaven Himalaya is THE BEST!!!

This year we did another trek with the great Heaven Himalaya trekking company (last year I trekked in the Everest Region for 24 days, the Annapurna Region with a friend for 8 days and did an Upper Mustang Jeep tour with them for 12 days - all with the Heaven Himalaya company). This fall we combined 3 treks into one 26 day trek first going into the beautiful and culturally rich Tsum Valley, then did the Manaslu Circuit over the Larke La and finished with the Annapurna Circuit. Heaven Himalaya secured the best lodging for us and thought of every detail - they managed Jeep rides and plane flights and everything in between. Everyone with the company is incredibly professional, supportive and kind. Our guides Shankar Adhikari and Babu as well as our porter Anish were exceptional and we consider them friends. We can’t thank HH enough for another wonderful experience. Thank you for being such good and honest people and for running such a high quality trekking company.

Best Time for Upper Mustang Jeep Tour

The best time for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour is during summer (June to August) and autumn (September to November), which is unique compared to most other Annapurna and Everest region treks.

Since Upper Mustang lies in a rain-shadow area behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, it receives very little monsoon rainfall, making summer an ideal time to visit when the rest of Nepal is experiencing heavy rains. The skies stay relatively clear, and the region's dramatic desert-like landscapes are fully accessible.

Autumn also offers excellent weather, with stable road conditions, clear mountain views, and comfortable daytime temperatures, making it one of the most popular seasons for the jeep tour.

Spring (March to May) is another good option, bringing milder temperatures and decent visibility, though winds can pick up in the afternoons.

Winter (December to February) is possible but can be extremely cold, especially at higher elevations like Lo Manthang, with freezing temperatures and occasional road closures due to snow.

What are the Cancellation and Refund Policy ?

You must note that your down payment is non-refundable in the event of cancellation. You have to mail us at info@heavenhimalaya.com at least 15 days prior to your trip departure date. Sometimes the cancellation can be because of unpredictable events (including extreme natural occurrences, safety or political concerns, or unexpected airport shutdowns), where you’ll have the option to reschedule your trek. Your deposited sum will be transferred to your upcoming trip.

Can I postpone my trek after booking?

Yes, most trekking companies allow date changes. Deposits are often adjusted as credit depending on company policy.

Visa and Arrival

Can I get a visa on arrival in Nepal?

Yes, Nepal provides a visa on arrival for most nationalities. The process is straightforward: you fill out an arrival form, pay the visa fee, and receive your visa at the airport. However, visa eligibility depends on nationality, and some countries are not eligible for visa on arrival. Citizens of certain countries (such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Nigeria, Syria, Ethiopia, Ghana, etc.) are required to apply for a visa in advance through a Nepal embassy. We always recommend checking updated visa rules before traveling, as policies may change.

How can I buy a SIM card in Nepal?

Buying a SIM card in Nepal is simple and can be done upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or at authorized telecom outlets throughout Kathmandu. The two main carriers are Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC). You will need your passport and a passport-sized photo for registration. Ncell offers the fastest 4G and is suitable for urban areas while NTC has more geographic reach making it more suitable in remote areas and high altitude trekking circuits. If you want peace of mind, you can get both. Both the carriers also offers eSIMs, if you phone supports them.

Does Nepal provide a Visa on Arrival?

Yes, Nepal offers a Visa on Arrival for citizens of most countries at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The process is generally straightforward: complete the arrival form, pay the applicable visa fee, and receive your visa upon entry.

However, Visa on Arrival eligibility depends on your nationality. Citizens of certain countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Nigeria, Syria, Ethiopia, and Ghana, are required to obtain a visa in advance through a Nepalese embassy or diplomatic mission before traveling.

To make your arrival smoother, we recommend completing the online visa application form before your trip, ideally one to two weeks prior to departure. This can significantly reduce processing time at the airport and help you avoid unnecessary delays.

As immigration policies may change, we strongly advise checking the latest visa requirements through official Nepal immigration sources or your nearest Nepalese embassy before traveling.

Where can I exchange money upon arrival in Nepal?

You can exchange foreign currency at the currency exchange counters located inside Tribhuvan International Airport after landing in Kathmandu. Exchange services are also widely available in tourist areas such as Thamel. Major currencies like USD, EUR, GBP, and AUD are commonly accepted for exchange. We recommend carrying some Nepali Rupees before starting your Everest trek, as ATM and banking facilities become limited in the higher mountain regions.

Hiking to Lo Manthang

How much does it cost to visit Lo Manthang?

The Lo Manthang requirement includes a special Mustang trekking permit. That is the reason it is expensive; however, various companies provide various packages. Choose one of the best trekking companies in Nepal and book a trip. The trip price to Heaven Himalaya is USD 2,200 for 18 days, which is very reasonable.
