Dead Bodies in Mount Everest: List of Deaths Since 1922

Hundreds of mountaineers have died while attempting the climb to the summit of Mount Everest since the 1900s. Most of the deaths were discovered, and their bodies have been taken down, but a few dead bodies litter the highest peak to this day.
Every dead body on Mt. Everest was once a highly motivated person so maybe calm down. – Douglas A. Boneparth (@dougboneparth) May 1, 2022
As people claim, the main reason behind such a high number of deaths on Mount Everest is overcrowding and the attempts on the climb by beginner mountaineers. Lately, the number of deaths in the graph has been declining, but dead bodies are still a common sight at the top of the mountain. In 2021, only four people died on the mountain, and the number was lowered to two by 2022 AD.
As of November 2022, 310 people had died while climbing the world’s highest peak. Most of the body was discovered and brought down to the base camp, but still, few litter the mountain. In spring 2023 alone, 17 people lost their lives trying to climb the highest peak.
Few of the dead bodies are still in the mountains, preserved by the extreme cold weather. Some of these corpses serve other climbers as grim markers, while many are yet to be discovered. The dead bodies expose themselves years later when the snow covering them melts down.
“I cannot believe what I saw up there,” Everest filmmaker Elia Saikaly wrote on Instagram after climbing the highest peak. “Death. Carnage. Chaos. Lineups. “Dead bodies on the route.”
Eleven people died climbing Mount Everest in the spring of 2019, and it made headlines everywhere. It was one of the deadliest seasons as the death toll rose. In 2015, the same mountain experienced an avalanche that swept away 19 people. There are many such numbers of deaths and horrific accidents on Everest.

Why are few dead bodies still there on Mt Everest?
when a climber dies while attempting the climb of Mt. Everest. It’s very difficult to bring them down. Bringing them down costs a lot of dollars and may also take people’s lives. In 1984, two climbers died while searching for another dead body on Mt. Everest.
Most of the time, local authorities send Sherpas to clear the bodies along the way. But it’s sometimes very hard to find the bodies because of the harsh conditions under the heap of snow and ice. It’s also expensive, dangerous, and takes a long time.
The locations of the corpses are unknown; sometimes they are under the ridge or have fallen into crevasses that climbers haven’t seen or been to.
There are also a few successful stories of recovering bodies from Mt. Everest. One such notable attempt by a Sherpa is the recovery of the body of Goutam Ghosh. Companies, governments, and relatives fund the recovery mission.
Some climbers also don’t want their bodies dragged down from Everest. They wanted to leave their bodies in the mountains if they died. So, there are also cases where the climber’s family has blocked bringing them down.
While it’s also not a surprise to leave the bodies on Everest or move them to the side from the main climbing trail, Rainbow Valley (Everest Graveyard) is an area above 8000 m on Everest where dead bodies litter the area.
Some of the famous bodies on Mount Everest are Tsewang Paljor, “Green Boots,” David Sharp, Rob Hall, Scoot Fischer, Hannelore Schmatz, Shriya Shah, “Klorfine,” George Mallory, Francys Arsentiev, and Sergei Arsentiev, “Sleeping Beauty.”

No matter what, Mount Everest is popular, whether it be for climbing purposes or trekking to the base camp.
