overview-iconTsum Valley with Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

The Manaslu and Tsum Valley trek is an exciting trip with stunning nature, traditional villages, and Buddhist culture.

During the tour, you will walk around Mt. Manaslu, appreciating the region’s geographical splendor. In a proper sense, this trekking package is a super combo of two interesting tours, namely the Tsum Valley Trek and the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

For your information, the Nepal Tourism Board opened Manaslu Trek for trekkers in 1995, and Tsum Valley was unknown to the world till 2008.

Though open to travelers, the trail receives only a few enthusiastic travelers owing to its remote terrain. The region can protect its natural and cultural heritage because it’s in a remote location.

The Tales of the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Region

Tsum Valley is an ancient territory hidden in the shadows of mountains. The valley lay near the Tibetan border and authorities restricted access to it until 2008. The Ganesh Himal, Singri Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges surround it.

The valley is home to Tibetan-origin people and has a sparse population of Tsum people. These communities have their own unique culture, customs, lifestyles, and dialects.

As Buddhism is a dominant religion in the valley, you can find many caves, monasteries, and gompas in the valley that date back to the first century. Because of its remoteness, the valley still preserves all the ancient heritage that this place possesses.

Visiting the valley is enlightening because it has virgin land, off-beaten tracks, and a powerful aura of Buddhism.

You can see beautiful mountain passes, gorges, hamlets, gompas, and monasteries on the Manaslu Circuit Tsum Valley Trek.

An interesting fact—did you know?

Polyandry is still in practice in the Tsum Valley. They wed brothers from the same family to a single woman! It sounds weird, but it is a fact.

Tsum Valley and Manaslu Itinerary

The Tsum Valley with the Manaslu Circuit Trek package is an astonishing journey close to the highest mountains. One such peak is Mount Manaslu, which stands tall at 8163 meters. It is the world’s eighth-highest mountain.

The adventure starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Machhakhola. From here, we slowly and gradually traverse upward to enter the Tsum Valley.

Then we walk to Jagat. Jagat is a beautiful place between Annapurna and Manaslu’s high mountains. It’s the starting point of some popular treks in Nepal, such as the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

We hike to villages like Chisapani and Chumling on our way to Chokhangparo. Similarly, in the Tsum Valley, we explore the ancient villages, caves, and gompas such as Milarepa’s Cave, Mu Gompa, and Rachen Gompa.

After exploring the valley, we come out of the valley ahead and head towards the Larkya La Pass at an elevation of 5160 meters. We pass various villages, farmlands, forests, and hamlets on our way to the pass. As we reach the pass, we will see some incredible views of Mt. Manaslu and other peaks in the surrounding area.

Climbing up the pass can be a tough task, but proper acclimatization and the right walking techniques may help you accomplish the journey.

A representative from our team will wait for you at the arrival terminal of Kathmandu airport. Make sure you look after a person with your nameplate!

The representative will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. As you check into the hotel, the representative will give you a synopsis of our plans. Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Sightseeing tour in Kathmandu includes a guided tour of the art, historical, and cultural monuments around Kathmandu city that has been listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site charts. Today, after breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up for a city tour ahead.

Manaslu tour starts from Kathmandu Durbar Square, a historical palace that dates back to the 16th century during the Malla reign in Nepal's medieval period. The palace is an enormous complex with a palace, courtyards, and temples. The structure is beautifully crafted with various wood, metal, and stonework.

We explore the perimeter of the palace and visit a museum inside the palace.

After exploring the palace, we head to the Swayambhunath stupa, a large stupa placed on a hilltop surrounded by various Buddha statues and monasteries. Next, we drive to Pashupatinath Temple, the oldest Hindu temple with many temples and statues that date back to ancient times.

Finally, we head to the Boudhanath Stupa, a huge stupa placed on a three-layered Mandela. We visit all these beautiful heritage sites and end our day with a drive back to your hotel. Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Get ready for a long drive today. After breakfast at the hotel, we will transfer you to a vehicle that will drive you to Macchakhola.

The first half of the trip is smooth along a blacktopped concrete road till Dhading Besi, and from Dhading Besi, the trail is graveled with difficulties.

So, get ready to shake your body with some moves as you drive along the bumpy road to Macchakhola. However, the road will offer some classic pictures of the countryside landscape of Nepal. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Maccha Khola.

After breakfast, we start our trekking journey in the Manaslu region of Nepal. Initially, we cross Maccha Khola and climb up gradually towards the tiny village of Khola Besi and then to the natural hot spring at Tatopani.

As we move ahead from Tatopani, we come across a forested area. We walk through the forest wilderness to Doban and continue up along the stone-paved staircases to Thado Bharyang. Next, we cross the west bank of Budhi Gandaki and climb up over a ridge.

Finally, we follow a beautiful trail along the river to the village of Jagat. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Jagat.

Leaving Jagat, we move ahead to enter the restricted section of the Tsum valley. We stop at a checkpoint in Jagat and show our permits, register them, and enter the valley. Enjoying the captivating views of Shangri Himal, we follow a trail along a river. We walk up and down the path that undulates up and down until we reach the village of Philim. We cross a bridge over a river to enter Philim and stop there for lunch.

After lunch, we make our way through the village, exploring the people, lifestyle, and amazing terrain around us. We come to acro that dispatch into two routes, i.e., one leads to the Manaslu Circuit trek and another to Tsum Valley. We walk until we reach Chisopani, which is the halting station for the day. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Chisopani.

After breakfast in Chumling, we make our way uphill to a ridge. From the top of the ridge, we can observe some spectacular views of Ganesh Himal.

We walk ahead to Ganesh Himal Base Camp and spend some time enjoying the mountains' close-up views. Leaving the base camp, we walk ahead toward the village of Chumling.

Chumling is a beautiful and large village that lies in the lower Tsum valley. It lies south of the beautiful Singri Himal. The walk for the day blesses us with some incredible views of Ganesh Himal and Singri Himal. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Chumling.

Today, we leave Chumling and head towards Chokhang Paro. We walk past a scenic trail with small settlements and impressive views of Ganesh Himal on the way.

The cultivated farmlands full of maize and potato plants, classical Tibetan-style stones, houses with flat roofs and colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and stupas along the way make our walk more interesting and awakening.

We follow the Syar river trail that goes down to Dumje and climbs steeply to the largest city in the Tsum valley, i.e., Chhokang Paro. Choking Paro lies on a flat and comprises two settlement areas, Chokhang and Paro. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Chokhangparo.

After breakfast, we get ready to leave Chokhangparo. In the morning, before breakfast, we can explore the surroundings of the place. Leaving Chokhangparo, we walk past various villages and follow a trail developed as a highway along the Tsum valley. As the valley is fertile, we can see the locals engaged in farming for a livelihood.

We cross Lamagaon on the way and continue to a sacred cave of St. Milarepa, known as Piren Cave.

The cave has footprints of St. Milarepa preserved in it. After exploring the cave, we follow the trail uphill until we reach the village of the Nile. Tonight, we spend our time at a guesthouse on the Nile.

It’s an interesting day to walk toward the Nepal-Tibet border area. In the morning, we leave the Nile and follow a trail towards the west to Mu Gompa. A gentle climb uphill from the Nile brings us to Mu Gompa at an elevation of 3700 meters.

At the gompa, we can get some insights into preserving Tibetan Buddhist culture and religion. It is a beautiful, ancient monastery with 100 monks.

The gompa also offers some spectacular views of Tibetan landscapes in the surrounding area. The Lungdung glacier and the lofty peaks surrounding the area are impressive. Tonight, we will spend our time at Mu Gompa.

After exploring the caves, gompas, and villages in the Tsum valley, it’s time to mark our journey for a circuit trip to Mt. Manaslu. Today, after breakfast, we descend to the village of Chumling.

We retrace our steps back, following the same path we had previously taken. the splendid views of the mountains, we drop to lower Tsum, i.e., Chumling village. Tonight, we will spend our time at a guesthouse in Chumling.

Leaving Chumling, we descend steeply to the village of Deng. The trail downhill is full of amazing mountain views of glittering snow-clad mountains. Relishing the stunning views of Ganesh Himal and Manaslu Himal, we make our way down along a steep grassy slope.

Walking can be difficult, and we should be careful as we move down to the Budi Gandaki riverbed. First, we cross a bridge over the river and follow a wide route full of bamboo trees.

Then we will pass a forest near the Deng river. Finally, we cross the river and enter the village of Deng. Tonight, we spend our time at a guesthouse in Deng.

We walk through Deng's farmlands and village and cross a suspension bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River.

We follow the trail that continues along an enchanting route to climb up to Rana. From here, the trail further climbs up and continues west towards the Budhi Gandaki valley.

We pass various forests and mani stones on the way to Ghap. Then we head towards Prok village, enjoying some amazing views of the Singri Himal on sight. We follow a trail beside the river and cross it many times along the forest and with gompas on the trail.

Finally, we do a steep climb along the way to reach Namrung. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Namrung.

Namrung is a beautiful viewpoint from where one can enjoy some interesting views of mountains like Singri Himal, Ganesh Himal, and Mt. Hiunchuli, etc. Enjoying our breakfast with amazing views of these mountains in the backdrop, Beholding the beauty of these mountains, we make our way towards Lho. We climb up a steep path through a forested area to Lihi.

As you move ahead of Namrung, you will notice a change in vegetation that turns more alpine. Even the dominance of Buddhism as a religion gets more intense.

People of Tibetan origin mostly inhabit the region ahead of Namrung. At Lihi, you can see a beautiful chorten and fields full of barley. Here, you will get a glimpse of the Manaslu Himal, and the view of Mt. Manaslu will follow you along with the Lho village. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Lho village.

Today, we leave Samagaon and proceed with our trek. We cross Shyla village on the way to reach Sama Gaon. The trail today passes through some amazing landscapes.

One can get some undisturbed close-up views of Mt. Manaslu from Sama Gaon. At Sama Gaon, we can explore the famous Ribung Gompa. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Sama Gaon.

It’s a beautiful day in Samagaon. Today, we don’t move forward with our trek. We stay in Samagaon and explore the surrounding areas. We stay in Samagaon today to acclimate to the rising elevation because we are already at heights and moving to a higher elevation region.

We have two options for the day: Manaslu base camp, Pungyen Gompa, and Birendra Tal. We can hike to any of these attractions today. In the evening, we return to Samagaon for an overnight stay. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Sama Gaon.

After breakfast, we climb uphill along a deserted path and windy valley to Samdo. We follow the Budhi Gandaki River and cross a bridge to take a trail that leads us to Larkya La. The trail passes through a charming forest full of rhododendron, juniper, and birch trees. The mani walls on the way add to the charm of the trail. Moving ahead, we climb up to Samdo, a place that is just 4 km away from the Tibetan border.

We can see a Tibetan refugee village with some adorable views of Mt. Manaslu, Simnang Himal, Ngadi Chuli, Manaslu glacier, Manaslu icefall, etc. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Samdo.

Today, we start our day with a delicious breakfast. Then we walk along the trail to cross a wooden bridge over the Budhi Gandaki River. After crossing the bridge, we will hike up towards Dharamshala. On the way, we get an outstanding glimpse of the Larkya glacier.

Upon reaching Dharamshala, we have our lunch and walk to Larkya Phedi to acclimatize ourselves for the journey ahead. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Dharamshala.

Today is one of the most awaited days of our Manaslu Circuit Trek because we will cross Larkya La, which is the highest point of our trek. So, we start our day early. It’s a challenging way up to Larkya La, but a sincere effort up the steady path can help us successfully reach the pass.

From the pass, we can enjoy some enchanting views of mountains like Mt. Himlung, Mt. Kang Guru, Annapurna II, etc. After a successful ascent up to the pass, we descend for around three hours to Bhimphedi. On the way down, we will see some magnificent views of icefalls and mountains. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Bhimphedi.

From Bhimphedi, the trail descends to the pastures and continues towards a bridge over the Dudh Khola River. We cross the bridge and walk through rhododendron forests, river valleys, and farmlands. Then we do a quick climb up to the village of Gho.

We continue along the trail until we reach Tilije. Tonight, spend your time at a guesthouse in Tilije.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we descend through a stone-paved path along with the village to Thonje village. We cross a police checkpoint on the way to Dharapani, the point that joins the route with the route of the Annapurna Circuit. From Dharapani, we take a jeep that will drop us at Besisahar.

From Besisahar, we take another vehicle that will drive us back to Kathmandu. Tonight, spend your time at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Today, fly home from Kathmandu or continue your travels to some other destinations around the globe. We will drop you off at the airport three hours before your scheduled flight.

We hope you had a great time with us. Thank you, and have a safe journey home.

Heaven Himalaya is the Best!!

This year we did another trek with the great Heaven Himalaya trekking company (last year I trekked in the Everest Region for 24 days, the Annapurna Region with a friend for 8 days and did an Upper Mustang Jeep tour with them for 12 days - all with the Heaven Himalaya company). This fall we combined 3 treks into one 26 day trek first going into the beautiful and culturally rich Tsum Valley, then did the Manaslu Circuit over the Larke La and finished with the Annapurna Circuit. Heaven Himalaya secured the best lodging for us and thought of every detail - they managed Jeep rides and plane flights and everything in between. Everyone with the company is incredibly professional, supportive and kind. Our guides Shankar Adhikari and Babu as well as our porter Anish were exceptional and we consider them friends. We can’t thank HH enough for another wonderful experience. Thank you for being such good and honest people and for running such a high quality trekking company.

Highly Recommend Heaven Himalaya

I recently completed a 24-day, three-circuit tour with Heaven Himalaya, exploring the Tsum Valley, Manaslu, and Annapurna Circuits. This was my first trip to Nepal, and it was an outstanding experience. From the outset, Heaven Himalaya impressed me with their professional communication. They hosted two informative Zoom calls to prepare us for the trip and to address any questions we had. Once in Nepal, they continued to handle unexpected changes seamlessly—like when some of our party decided to forgo a high-altitude pass or when our in-country flight was unexpectedly canceled. Knowing that Heaven Himalaya was always taking care of us and would competently handle any unforeseen circumstances allowed me to let go of any concerns and totally immerse myself in enjoying this remarkable country. I also can not speak highly enough of our guide and porters: Shankar Adhikari, Babu and Anish. They were not only friendly companions but also exceptionally attentive to our needs. Trekking involves a lot of behind-the-scenes coordination, especially given the high demand for tea house accommodations during the peak season and the occassional changes in plans. Shankar's experience and personal relationships in the region proved invaluable, ensuring our trek was smooth even when we had to adapt our itinerary. During the last five days of our Annapurna trek, I separated from the group to explore the high-altitude destinations of Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. Shankar stayed with the group, and I trekked with Babu, who served as both porter and guide. Again, Heaven Himalaya’s ability to accommodate this change in plans is a testament to its responsiveness and flexibility. Babu was an excellent guide with over fifteen treks in this area. He was extremely knowledgeable about the conditions and friendly and welcome company as the two of us made our way up and down some epic routes. As someone who has only trekked in Nepal once, I can't compare Heaven Himalaya to other companies directly. However, I did observe other trekkers interacting with their guides, and I heard mixed reviews about their experiences. Based on my observations and experiences, I am grateful for our choice of Heaven Himalaya and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone considering a trekking adventure in Nepal. I look forward to trekking with them again on my next visit!

Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley

We booked our trek about three months before the trek itself, and throughout the process, Ramhari and Sanjeev were extremely helpful and patient with our endless questions. We opted for the Tsum Valley extension to the Manaslu Trek, as we wanted a more remote and less populated route (for locals and trekkers). We could not be more delighted with our trek and the whole Nepal experience that Heaven Himalaya arranged for us. Having followed the guidance on the excellent HH website, our kit weighed about 20kg (for the porter) plus our own small backpacks (of about 5kg each). I can offer tips on what to take or not to take if anyone wishes. We got along really well with our guide, Dipak, and our porter, Babu, and between all of us we discussed modifications to the planned itinerary so that we had minimal'resting' days. This meant that we covered the ground a lot quicker than planned, and Babu had to work extra hard, but he and Dipak were excellent throughout, showing true professionalism, admirable flexibility, and great humour in all situations. All of our modifications to the itinerary were subject to satisfactory acclimatization; we were fine, but this wasn't the case for some trekkers, and Dipak was careful to ensure that we didn't try to do anything that we were not ready for. The trek itself was like nothing else, especially the Tsum Valley. It was like stepping into a bygone era, and it was a real privilege to be able to travel and live for a short while in the land of these Tibetan-descended people. Their friendliness and hospitality were faultless, and we enjoyed sights and experiences that are very rare these days. Unlike the Tsum Valley (which is an out-and-back excursion), the Manaslu circuit is walked by (almost) all trekkers in an anti-clockwise direction, so we only met tourists when we were overtaking them or at the Tea Houses, which meant that it felt even more remote. Throughout the trek, the scenery and landscape were surprisingly varied and included forest, valleys, plains, farmland, and lots of boulder-strewn tracks. Several landslides provided potentially dangerous crossings, but our guide was very careful to ensure they were crossed as safely as possible. A particular treat was the number and variety of animals, from domestic dogs and chickens to mules, ponies, cattle, oxen, and yaks, plus some bonuses such as vultures, wild blue sheep, wild goats, various monkeys and lizards, and thousands of butterflies. Bizarrely, the busiest place was the lodge on the night before the Larka La Pass crossing: there is only one 'guest house' and so everyone has to stay there. It was an early start for the crossing (0500 set-off for us, and we were last to leave), and the trekking was tough. This was the one day on which Dipak insisted that we walk at his pace due to the risks of an oxygen shortage at 5000m. For the first time, we could not have gone faster if we'd wanted to. It was quite hard work; a few dizzy spells and minor headaches were our worst symptoms, but some people really suffered. (Succumbing to AMS is almost entirely random. Two porters from other groups had to turn back at 4000 m.). We would highly recommend Heaven Himalaya, our guide Dipak, and our porter Babu. Everyone had the perfect balance of professionalism, hard work, and great humour, which meant that the trek went exactly as we wished. As a bonus, our rapid pace meant that we had a few days in Pokhara after the trek, and we would thoroughly recommend the city (far better than Kathmandu) if you can spare a few days after your trek.

Inaugural journey to Nepal

We chose to embark on the Tsum Valley Trekking adventure for our inaugural journey to Nepal. Our decision was driven by the desire to explore a region that had not been overrun by hordes of tourists and was in close proximity to Tibet, allowing us to experience unique cultural influences. The trek turned out to be an unforgettable experience, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking to immerse themselves in foreign cultures while enjoying a hiking adventure. Our guide, Shankar, and our porter, Babu, provided exceptional care and made our journey truly enjoyable. Thanks to the efficient organization by Heaven Himalaya, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the experience and savor the moments. Prior to the trek, we had a comprehensive pre-trip briefing, during which we could address any questions we had and gain a thorough understanding of the trek's various stages and what to expect. We extend our gratitude to Heaven Himalaya for their excellent organization, and we genuinely hope that Shankar and Babu had an equally enjoyable time with us. Without a doubt, our next trek in Nepal will be with Heaven Himalaya once again!

A wonderful experience!

Trekking with Heaven Himalaya was an excellent adventure! Ram and his team were consistently professional and friendly as they saw us through the Tsum Valley/Manaslu Circuit trek. Ram promptly answered all of our pre-trip questions, provided us with a comprehensive list of items to bring, and saw to our needs while we were in Nepal. Our guide, Som, was extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and trekking with him was a pleasure. We highly recommend Heaven Himalaya!
