Lhakpa Sherpa to climb Mt. Everest for the tenth time

Lhakpa Sherpa, a 48-year-old woman mountaineer, is all set to climb Mt. Everest for the 10th time this season.

Ms. Lhakpa first climbed Mt. Everest in 2000 AD from Nepal’s side. She is the only woman who has climbed the mighty Everest nine times already. And, she holds the Guinness world record for the most ascents of Mt. Everest by a woman.

This spring, she will attempt to make it a double-digit number by adding one more ascent to the list. Ms. Lhakpa has successfully climbed Everest from the Chinese side many times. And, this time, she will climb from Nepal’s side. “I am following the alpine style of climbing that Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary followed to step on top of the world for the very first time,” she explained.

On April 11, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) bid farewell to Lhakpa Sherpa, who is attempting the historic climb of the tallest peak in the world for the 10th time. NMA had organized an event for her farewell.

The NMA president, Lama, offered Khada and handed over an NMA flag to MS Lhakpa. He added, “This is our privilege to have you here. I, personally and on behalf of the NMA family, wish you all the very best for your historic achievement. “

The strong sherpa woman will leave Kathmandu on April 15th for her 10th Everest expedition, which will again set a new world record for the maximum number of Everest climbs by women. She will carry the flag of NMA to the summit.

She landed last Friday in Nepal from the USA to set a record again. “I want to inspire today’s youth and women,” she said. Talking about women’s empowerment, she also added, “Nepali women are hardworking and can do anything they want.”

Ms. Lhakpa first climbed the tallest peak in 2000 AD, having had no formal training in mountaineering. She was raised with her 11 siblings in the Himalayas. This spring, she will follow the traditional route. That means she will first trek to Salleri and then start trekking towards the base camp with the help of porters.

Lhakpa, a former Seven-Eleven worker, also scaled Mount Everest after the birth of her first daughter, while she was two months pregnant with her second child. ” Now my daughter is also trekking to the Everest Base Camp,” she said.
