The Mount Everest Helicopter Tour is a luxurious one-day flying experience that takes you from Kathmandu to the heart of the world’s highest peak.

This epic helicopter ride to Mount Everest allows you to experience the beauty of the entire Mount Everest region and Kala Patthar in just a few hours, a journey that typically takes nearly two weeks of walking with the Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary.

Unlike the standard trek, this helicopter tour doesn’t demand months of physical preparation. Thus, if you are seeking a quick and convenient way to witness Everest’s magnificence without extensive commitment, this Mount Everest flight in a helicopter is the perfect choice.

What does a typical one-day Mount Everest helicopter flight look like?

Starting early in the morning, you will be transferred to Kathmandu Airport from your hotel, from where you catch a helicopter that takes you to Mt. Everest. As the flight progresses, you will take in the remarkable landscape of Everest’s peaks, glaciers, and villages from the helicopter’s window.

Sometimes, the helicopter might take a 15-minute break at Lukla Airport for refueling. But mostly, you will fly directly to Kala Patthar View Point and above Everest Base Camp.

Before August 2023, helicopters were allowed to land at Kala Patthar but after August, they aren’t allowed to. So you will only fly over Kala Patthar and come to the Everest View Hotel for landing.

So, after hours of flight, the helicopter will make its landing at the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m), a renowned viewpoint offering an up-close view of Everest’s splendor. At the hotel, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast with a view of Mt. Everest (8,848.86 m) and other towering peaks, including Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Amadablam (6,812 m), Khangtega (6,783 m), Thamserku (6,608 m), Taboche (6,495 m), and Khumbila (5,761 m).

Finally, your two-way Everest helicopter journey concludes with a return to Kathmandu in the same chopper, leaving you with the cherished memory of witnessing Mount Everest’s rare beauty from a unique perspective.

The best time for the helicopter ride to Mount Everest

The best time for helicopter tours to Mount Everest is during the fall and spring. These seasons have the nicest weather, making your experience more special. Still, before booking, it’s a good idea to check the weather forecast to be sure.

Picking the right time and season is important for an amazing Mount Everest helicopter trip. For the best views, choose spring or autumn. These times have steady weather and clear mountain views. You will see Everest and the nearby mountains beautifully.

Detailed itinerary for a helicopter ride to Mount Everest

5:30–6:00: Departure from Hotel to Airport

Early in the morning, after grabbing hot tea or coffee, you will drive towards the domestic terminal of Kathmandu International Airport. During this time, there will be no traffic, so it is possible to reach the airport within a 15-minute drive from your hotel.

6:00–6:30: Complete Airport Formalities and Board Helicopter

Once you arrive at the airport, complete airport formalities and board a helicopter flight for Everest sightseeing. The pilot or support crew members will brief you on safety protocols that you need to adhere to during helicopter flights. Later, you head towards the departure point to board the helicopter.

6:30–7:15: Helicopter Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla

Take off from the airport in Kathmandu and fly east along the Himalayan mountain range to Lukla Airport. Within a few minutes of takeoff, you will get an amazing aerial view of Kathmandu Valley and the distant Himalayan mountain ranges.

Next, you fly over the famous Nagarkot hill station and Jiri forest and land at Lukla. An aerial view of a mountainous landscape featuring a lush forest surrounding snow-capped peaks is just marvelous.

7:15–7:30: Refueling Break at Lukla Airport

Upon landing at Lukla Airport, a brief pause will be taken for refueling. During this interlude, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the breathtaking vistas of lush green hills and the awe-inspiring Himalayan panorama.

Observing the aircraft’s landing and takeoff on the world’s shortest runways presents a unique adventure. As you take in this captivating spectacle, your 15-minute break swiftly comes to an end.

7:30–7:50: Helicopter Flight from Lukla to Kala Patthar

Following a brief intermission for refueling, you will embark on a captivating flight to Kala Patthar. As you soar above the roaring Dudh Koshi River and traverse the picturesque Sagarmatha National Park, you will be treated to a visual feast.

En route, you will catch sight of dedicated trekkers making their way along the EBC trail, serene Buddhist monasteries, and charming sherpa villages, including Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Gorak Shep. You land at Kala Patthar.

Amidst this awe-inspiring helicopter journey, be sure not to overlook the ethereal sight of snow-capped mountains like Mount Everest, floating beneath you. Moreover, the panoramic vistas of the Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, and Everest Base Camp, all viewed from an aerial perspective, are experiences that defy verbal description. This encounter with nature’s grandeur is truly magical.

Keynote: During the flight from Lukla to Kala Patthar, it is crucial to decrease the overall weight due to the ascent to higher altitudes. As you ascend through the atmosphere, the air pressure reduces, leading to a reduction in lift generated by the helicopter unless counteracted.

Consequently, to optimize safety and performance, a group of 4 or 5 individuals will be divided into two separate shuttles departing from Hotel Everest View. This approach ensures a responsible and secure ascent to Kala Patthar.

7:50–8:00: Helicopter Lands, Explore Kala Patthar Area

In mere moments, your helicopter will touch down in the amphitheater of the Himalayas. Upon your arrival at Kala Patthar, a breathtaking reward awaits you: a 360-degree panoramic spectacle showcasing the towering peaks of the Everest region. Some of the prominent mountains you can see from here are:

  • Above 8,000 meters: Everest and Lhotse
  • Above 7,000 meters: Nuptse, Changtse, and Pumori
  • Above 6,000 meters: Ama Dablam, Chumbu, Thamserku, Kangtega, Taboche, and Lobuche.

Enjoy the view, capture the moments, and return to Hotel Everest View with a life-changing experience.

Keynote: As you venture into the exploration of Kala Patthar, the helicopter’s engine will remain operational. You will have 15 to 20 minutes to immerse yourself in the surroundings.

It’s important to be aware that remaining at high altitudes for an extended period poses a risk of altitude sickness. However, for added safety, an oxygen cylinder will be on hand to mitigate potential concerns.

8:00–8:15: Depart from Kala Patthar, fly to Hotel Everest View

Bid farewell to Kala Patthar, taking with you its breathtaking views as you ascend towards the Everest View Hotel. One last opportunity to relish the majesty of Everest from a bird’s perspective

Gliding over Everest Base Camp, Khumbu Glacier, the intricate Khumbu Icefall, Tengboche Monastery, and vibrant Sherpa villages, your helicopter gently touches down at the welcoming entrance of the Hotel Everest View.

8:15–9:00: Enjoy Breakfast at Hotel Everest View

9:50–11:00: Transfer from Airport to Hotel via Ground Transportation

Diverse Helicopter Services in the Everest Region: Beyond Everest Base Camp

Apart from this one-day helicopter tour to the Everest base camp, we serve different helicopter services in the Everest region. You can get a brief outlook below:

Helicopter flights from Kathmandu to Lukla and Lukla to Kathmandu

In recent times, the Nepalese government has instituted certain regulations concerning flights to Lukla. Due to heightened demands for both land and airspace and to address traffic concerns, some flights to the Everest region have been redirected to Ramechhap in the eastern part of Nepal.

The designated airport is Manthali Airport, which requires several hours of travel by bus from Kathmandu. To catch an early morning flight to Lukla, travelers must set out from Kathmandu before dawn, typically around 1 or 2 a.m.

Ensuring a restful night’s sleep before embarking on a challenging trek is crucial. Unfortunately, quality lodging options around Manthali airport are limited. Consequently, if flights are delayed or canceled, securing suitable accommodations in the Ramechhap area can prove challenging.

In such circumstances, opting for a direct helicopter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla or vice versa proves advantageous. This 45- or 60-minute journey remains viable even in slightly inclement weather conditions, as helicopters can operate more flexibly.

By choosing this helicopter flight, trekkers arrive at Lukla feeling rejuvenated and ready to commence their trek. If you intend to avail of this flight either to Lukla or back to Kathmandu, it’s’ essential to make bookings.

Helicopter flight back to Kathmandu via Lukla from Gorak Shep or Ever Base Camp

After hiking EBC, you can embark on a remarkable helicopter journey from Gorak Shep or EBC to Kathmandu. If the prospect of retracing your steps to Lukla on foot doesn’t appeal to you, this flight offers an ideal solution.

By opting for this helicopter transfer, you can forgo the physical demands of trekking back along the same trail. Instead, you can relish the view of the EBC trail from an entirely new perspective as you soar through the skies. This flight not only preserves your time but also conserves your energy.

Rather than undertaking a two-day downhill trek, you can effortlessly reach Kathmandu in under an hour aboard the helicopter.

Mount Everest Flight from Hotel Everest View to Everest Base Camp

After trekking to Hotel Everest View, it is possible to take a helicopter from the hotel to Everest Base Camp. This flight will take you over the Khumbu glacier and through the mountains, offering you different views that you might not get during the trek.

The flight doesn’t land at Everest Base Camp as there is no proper landing place. However, you will get a bird’s-eye view of the camp with colorful expedition tents, especially during climbing months.

Nonetheless, this flight will land at Kala Patthar, the best Everest viewpoint. This viewpoint offers a comparatively better place for landing, and travelers can have a close-up view of Mt. Everest and other surrounding peaks.

In a mere 10-minute helicopter journey, you will be swiftly transported from Pheriche to the heart of Kala Patthar. This option provides a good escape from the physically demanding trekking days typically required to reach Kala Patthar.

By choosing this flight option, you save time and minimize your physical strain. It’s a seamless way to bridge the gap between Pheriche and Kala Patthar. You will have more time to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring surroundings and embrace the Everest experience.

Helicopter flight from Pheriche to Kathmandu

Trekking to the iconic base camp of Mt. Everest is not an easy task. Long trekking days and high altitude might break you. You may have no energy left for trekking back down to Lukla.

Additionally, you might not want to retrace the same trekking route you took earlier. Then taking a helicopter flight back to Kathmandu from Pheriche will provide you with a different aerial perspective of the stunning Everest region.

Helicopter Flight from Tengboche to Everest Base Camp

Tengboche is home to Tengboche or Thyangboche Monastery. This monastery is one of the most prominent Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the Khumbu Valley of Nepal. Tengboche lies at an altitude of 3,867m. The beautiful trekking trail leads you to Tengboche village.

However, to avoid strenuous ascents and descents, there is the option of a 15-minute helicopter flight to Everest base camp. You will get close-up views of some iconic mountain peaks, including Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Changtse, and Mt. Everest.

Helicopter flight from Tengboche to Lukla or Kathmandu

Embarking on a helicopter journey from Tengboche to Lukla or Kathmandu offers a convenient route for those who consider their Himalayan trekking venture fulfilled at Tengboche.

For trekkers seeking to bypass the strenuous downhill hike from Tengboche to Lukla, this helicopter option presents an ideal solution. It allows you to seamlessly conclude your trekking expedition with the option of a brief and scenic flight to reach Kathmandu.

Helicopter Flight from Dingboche to Kathmandu

Helicopter flight from Lobuche to Kathmandu

Nestled below Gorak Shep, Lobuche is a quaint village. The trek from here to Everest Base Camp takes 8 hours. • Warmest recommendation to our guide

We are a couple from Denmark who have long wanted to go The Manaslu Circuit. In this connection, we reached out to one of our friends who recommended Prem. They had gone to Manaslu together a few years ago and he put us in touch. From the first contact Prem has been super professional and he has been very attentive to our needs and wishes for the trip. When we arrived in Kathmandu, Prem picked us up at the airport and walked us to the hotel. Our trip started on our 3rd holiday and everything was very organized and we felt completely safe throughout the trip. Prem guided us over Larke Pass in the best way, and we are incredibly happy to have shared such a great experience with him. In connection with our return journey, Prem came to our hotel and he accompanied us to the airport and wished us a safe journey.

Apart from organizing our trip to Manaslu, Prem has reached out and been extremely helpful throughout our 6 week journey.

We will thus give him our warmest recommendations!

  • Solo trekk to Annapurna Base Camp

I did the Annapurna Base Camp hike in mid-November, and Heaven Himalaya made the entire experience smooth and stress-free. Booking was easy, and their responses on WhatsApp were always prompt and helpful.

As a solo female traveler, I appreciated how well everything was organized. They helped me with gear selection, forex exchange, and every small detail. When I arrived in Kathmandu, all logistics were taken care of, including airport transfers and trail arrangements. I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

My guide, Surya, was amazing. With over 15 years of experience, he knew the trails inside out and ensured everything was taken care of. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and he addressed all my concerns with ease.

I finished the trail quicker than expected, and they were flexible enough to adjust my bookings and logistics without any hassle. Their willingness to accommodate changes made the trip even more enjoyable.

Price-wise, they’re in line with the market, but their response time and ability to customize based on individual needs really stood out.

Helicopter Tours in Spring (March to May)

Spring is the most popular time for Mount Everest helicopter tours. With clear skies and comfortable temperatures, it offers stunning views of Mt. Everest and other peaks. Let’s explore the months within this season:

March:

As the first month of spring, March is ideal for helicopter tours. Some snow at higher altitudes enhances the Everest base camp trail’s beauty. Daytime temperatures range from 8°C to 17°C, and nighttime temperatures are around -5°C to 5°C.

April:

Another great month for helicopter flights, April boasts stable weather with minimal wind and precipitation. Enjoy magnificent mountain views from both the helicopter and Kala Patthar. Daytime temperatures span 10°C to 19°C, and nights are 0°C to 8°C.

May:

May marks the end of the spring and is also climbing season. In addition to the steady weather, the sight of colorful tents at Everest Base Camp is captivating. The aerial view provides unobstructed glimpses of breathtaking mountains and landscapes, with snowy peaks adding to the picturesque scenery. Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 19°C, while nighttime temperatures range between 0°C and 8°C.

Mount Everest Helicopter flights in Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another prime window for a remarkable one-day Mount Everest helicopter ride. After the monsoon, the air becomes crisp and the skies clear, offering exceptional visibility for scenic helicopter flights. The weather is stable, boasting mild temperatures and a minimal chance of rain.

September:

Early September introduces autumn through occasional rainfall, which can limit visibility and affect flight plans. Checking weather forecasts before planning the helicopter tour to base camp is crucial. Generally, the weather stabilizes with clear skies. Daytime temperatures range from 12°C to 20°C, while nights are 0°C to 5°C.

October:

October is excellent for Everest helicopter tours due to clear skies and stable weather. The weather in the Everest region is generally stable. During this time, you have the best chance to enjoy an unobstructed view of the stunning mountain ranges and landscapes. Additionally, mountain peaks are typically snow-free, ensuring exceptional views that are still just as impressive. Daytime temperatures range from 8°C to 16°C, and nights are around -5°C to 5°C.

November:

Towards autumn’s end, November remains an optimal time for Everest helicopter flights. The weather remains stable, offering clear skies and excellent mountain views from both the air and the ground. Daytime temperatures during this month range from 2°C to 12°C, and nights are about -8°C to 0°C.

Mount Everest flights in Winter (December to February)

Winter is the time when you can experience Kala Patthar helicopter flights. However, it’s not the best choice due to heavy snowfalls during this season. Even so, the snowy mountains showcase exceptional beauty, revealing their true magnificence in winter.

December:

As winter begins, a helicopter ride to Everest Base Camp provides a view of the Himalayas blanketed in snow. On clear days, the snowy peaks against the blue sky are breathtaking. Yet, it’s essential to check the weather forecast and consult experts before flying to Mount Everest base camp. Daytime temperatures reach around 4 °C, with early mornings and nights at -14°C.

January:

January is the coldest month in Nepal, including Everest Base Camp. January sees harsh weather with heavy snowfall, and helicopter rides are possible but challenging due to the cold and snow. Landing on snow-covered terrain is hazardous.

Likewise, heavy snowfall can lead to flight restrictions and reduced visibility. Daytime temperatures hover around 4°C, while early mornings and nights drop to -17 °C.

February:

February continues the winter chill with freezing temperatures and snow-covered high-altitude terrain. Taking off and landing helicopters in such conditions is difficult. This makes February unsuitable for the Everest helicopter tour program. Daytime temperatures are about 4 °C, with early mornings and nights reaching -15°C.

Keynote: During winter, snow complicates helicopter flights, making them riskier and more complex. We don’t recommend helicopter tours during this season. However, if you still choose winter, prepare for cold temperatures and potentially difficult flying conditions.

Mount Everest Heli Flights in Summer (June to August)

Summer is the monsoon season in Nepal and runs from June to August. This season is characterized by heavy rainfall due to the monsoon. However, the high mountains and the Everest region above Namche experience less rainfall.

Similarly, the demand for helicopter tours is lower during this season due to fewer tourists, which can lead to slightly higher costs for individuals since the cost is shared among fewer people.

Likewise, temperatures during this season are warm, and the humidity is high. The monsoon brings fog and limited visibility in the mountains. This can cause delays or cancellations of the Everest Base Camp helicopter ride. While there are days with bad weather, there are also clear days when helicopter tours are possible.

June:

June marks the beginning of the monsoon season in Nepal. The days are warm, wet, and humid. Rainfall and low visibility make flying to Everest Base Camp less safe. Fog and clouds can obstruct views of mountain ranges and landscapes. Daytime temperatures during this month range from 2°C to 12°C, and nighttime temperatures hover between -8°C and 0°C.

July:

The weather conditions in July are similar to June. The days remain warm, wet, and humid, with ongoing heavy rainfall and limited visibility in the mountains. Like previous months, helicopter tours of the Himalayas are affected by weather challenges posed by fog and rain.

The combination of these factors can lead to disruptions in tour schedules. Daytime temperatures fall within the range of 2°C to 12°C, while nighttime temperatures maintain a level between -8°C and 0°C.

August:

August maintains the monsoon pattern with warm temperatures, high humidity, and considerable rainfall. The weather conditions in this month closely resemble those of June and July.

There are continuous challenges such as fog, rain, and limited visibility. These factors can impact the feasibility of the Mt. Everest helicopter tour. Daytime temperatures range from 2°C to 12°C, and nighttime temperatures remain between -8°C and 0°C.

Required Permits for a One-Day Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

For a one-day Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing, it’s essential to obtain two permits like the process for the EBC trek. The following permits are needed at similar costs:

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality Permit (KPLM)

This permit is necessary for any activities conducted within the national park area. The cost of this permit is NPR 2000 for all nationalities. You can purchase this permit exclusively from Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: NPR 3000

To enter the Sagarmatha National Park, you will need this entry permit, obtainable from the National Life and Wildlife Conservation Department. Distribution centers for the permit are located at Lukla, Monjo, and Namche Bazaar.

The permit cost varies depending on nationality: NPR 100 for Nepali citizens, NPR 1500 for SAARC nationals, and NPR 3000 for foreigners.

Keynote: To obtain these permits, you must present your original passport, one passport-size photo, and a permit fee.

We are available to assist you in purchasing permits for the Mount Everest helicopter flight. Get in touch with us, and we will guide you through the process.

Mount Everest Helicopter Tour FAQs

1. General Faqs

How long is the total duration of the helicopter tour to Mount Everest Base Camp?

The total duration of the sightseeing helicopter tour to Mount Everest base camp is 4 hours.

Can we do a helicopter ride to the Everest summit?

Yes, you can take a helicopter ride to the top of Mt. Everest. Due to weather and other logistical challenges, flying a helicopter over Everest is not possible. But our Everest base camp helicopter tour offers an adventurous flight to the nearby base camp, i.e., Kala Patthar. This peak stands at 5,644 meters, which is the highest trekking point of the Everest base camp trek.

How high does a helicopter fly during the Mount Everest helicopter flight tour?

The Everest helicopter flight starts at an altitude of 1,400 meters and progresses toward Everest base camp at an elevation of 5,364 meters. The journey includes a landing at Kala Patthar, located at an elevation of 5,644 meters.

During the EBC helicopter ride, the flight will typically ascend to heights ranging from approximately 5,000 meters to 5,644 meters.

However, it’s important to consider that the exact flying altitude can also be influenced by the capability of the helicopter’s engine. Safety guidelines are meticulously followed by the pilots to ensure a secure and well-regulated flight experience for all passengers.

What time of day is best for a helicopter tour?

Generally, morning weather is stable with low wind and high visibility. So, the morning is the best time of day for a helicopter tour.

Do helicopters land at Everest Base Camp?

No, on this Everest helicopter tour, you will not land at Everest base camp. We all know that Everest Base Camp stands on the unstable terrain of the Khumbu Glacier. This glacier is a long, winding stretch of rock, rubble, and ice. So there is no proper space and a high risk of landing on such uneven terrain. So pilots don’t recommend flying helicopters to base camp for a safe landing.

In terms of view, Everest Base Camp doesn't offer the view of majestic Everest. But Kala Patthar offers a close-up view of mighty peaks including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dabla, Pumori, and many others.

But during this helicopter ride, you will fly over Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Glacier. So on this Kala Patthar helicopter tour, you get to see the view from above, which you will not be able to see from the base camp.

How long will the helicopter take to land at Kala Patthar?

Helicopter landing time at Kala Patthar is 10–15 minutes. This time is enough to explore and look around. Within this time frame, you can first soak in the beauty of the mountains and then capture the moments.

Is it possible to land in Kala Patthar for more than 15 minutes?

Yes, it is possible to land in Kala Patthar for more than 15 minutes. But it is not safe. Kala Patthar stands above 5,000 m, which is the highest trekking point of the classic EBC trek. Direct flying from Kathmandu to Kala Patthar creates a drastic elevation change. So, you might catch altitude sickness.

However, if you booked a chartered flight or have your group and every member agree, you may stay longer. But always remember to prioritize your health first.

How do I book an Everest Base Camp helicopter tour as a single traveler?

To reserve your EBC helicopter tour as an individual traveler, you can reach out to us. Once you have chosen an available date for the heli tour, we will arrange for you to join an existing group.

What is the age limit for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

There is no age limit for helicopter landings on Everest Kala Patthar. Any age group, from children and adults to elders, can join the heli tour to Everest. If there is an emergency or any guests feel uneasy, we will immediately return to the safe locations and provide the required medical assistance.

What is the weight limit for the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

During the EBC helicopter tour, the helicopters used have a maximum weight capacity of 500 kg up to an altitude of 4,000 meters. These helicopters are designed to accommodate a total of six individuals, which includes the pilot as well.

For a group consisting of three people or fewer, the helicopter can directly fly from Lukla to Kala Patthar via Everest Base Camp. This ensures a seamless journey for smaller groups.

However, once the altitude exceeds 4,000 meters, the helicopter’s weight capacity is reduced to an average of 250 kg. In situations where there are more than three individuals, adjustments must be made to adhere to this weight limit.

To accommodate such cases, the helicopter will first land at either Pheriche or Syangboche before proceeding to Kala Patthar. This approach helps maintain safety and compliance with weight restrictions while still allowing for the breathtaking experience of the Everest region.

How safe is the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour with landing?

During the EBC helicopter tour, we fly you in a B13 helicopter, as this is best for flying in high-altitude environments. This helicopter has five seats.

Moreover, the pilots are highly trained and experienced in flying in the Himalayan region above Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Till now, they have completed numerous rescue missions from Everest Base Camps 2 and 3. So they are well-versed in the challenges of flying in high-altitude environments.

In addition, for us, the client's safety is the utmost priority. We don’t take any chances and operate the helicopter tour in unfavorable weather conditions. If the weather is unclear, we don’t fly, and refunds are provided in such cases.

Are oxygen cylinders available during the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour?

Rest assured, our helicopters are equipped with oxygen cylinders to address any potential emergency scenarios. It’s important to note that the EBC helicopter tour is designed to be a relatively accessible and straightforward way to experience the Everest region.

As such, while oxygen cylinders are on hand in the helicopters, they are generally not needed for the tour due to their manageable nature. Your safety and comfort are our priorities throughout the journey.
