Overview of Kailash Tour – 13 Days

The Kailash Tour is full of adventure, history, and nature. On this journey, you will see ancient monasteries, quiet villages, wide open landscapes, snow-covered mountains, and clear blue lakes. Many tour packages are available from Kathmandu in Nepal or from Lhasa in Tibet. The most important part of this journey is the 3-day trek around Mount Kailash, which makes the tour very special.

This is not just a travel trip; it is also a spiritual pilgrimage. Pilgrims and travelers walk around Mount Kailash following a 52-kilometer path, which is called the Kailash Kora or Parikrama. People of different religions believe this walk is one of the holiest journeys. The tour also gives chances to visit monasteries, see local traditions, and meet Tibetan people.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar together create one of the most powerful and peaceful places in the Himalayas. Many people believe that just seeing Kailash and bathing in Lake Manasarovar brings peace and blessings. The 13-day tour from Kathmandu to Kailash offers this experience along with the beauty of Tibet. A professional team takes care of the journey, making sure the trip is safe, comfortable, and memorable.

The Kailash Overland Tour is designed both for pilgrims who seek blessings and for nature lovers who want to enjoy mountains and lakes. It is a journey with many sides: spiritual, cultural, and adventurous. Mount Kailash has deep sacred significance. For Hindus, it is the home of Lord Shiva. Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers also respect it as a holy place. Walking around the mountain, called circumambulation or Parikrama, is the central part of the pilgrimage. People believe it brings blessings, removes bad karma, and fills the heart with peace.

Lake Manasarovar is another highlight of the tour. It is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and is believed to be very holy. Pilgrims take a holy bath here and perform prayers on its shores. Along with the natural and spiritual sides, there are cultural experiences too. The journey includes visits to old monasteries, stops in Tibetan villages, and time to understand the Tibetan lifestyle.

The Kailash journey also has some physical demands. The altitude is very high, and the walking paths are sometimes steep and rocky. This is why travelers need to be healthy and give their bodies time to adjust to the high altitude. There are different travel routes for the Kailash Tour. Many people start from Kathmandu in Nepal, while others begin from Lhasa in Tibet. The overland route is very popular because it shows landscapes, mountains, and Tibetan culture along the way.

Some people prefer to trek around Kailash for the full spiritual experience, while others may choose a helicopter tour for comfort and speed. Both options give the chance to see the holy mountain and Lake Manasarovar in their full beauty. At the end of the day, the 13-day Kailash Tour is more than just travel. It is a mix of nature, culture, and spirituality that leaves a lasting memory in the heart of every traveler. This special journey is organized with care and dedication by Heaven Himalaya.

Kailash Tour Itinerary

The Kailash Tour usually starts from Kathmandu in Nepal or from Lhasa in Tibet. From Kathmandu, travelers drive to the border town called Kerung, while from Tibet, the journey often begins in Lhasa. These places are important because they help travelers get ready for the tour. People usually spend a little time in Kerung or Lhasa to adjust their bodies to the high altitude. This is called acclimatization, and it makes the journey safer and easier.

After getting used to the altitude, the drive continues through the wide and open land of Tibet. The journey goes all the way to a town called Darchen, which is the base camp for Mount Kailash. From here, travelers begin the most important part of the trip – walking around the holy mountain. This walk is called Kailash Kora or Parikrama. It usually takes three to four days to complete. During this time, people walk slowly and carefully around the mountain, seeing its beauty from every side.

Another highlight of the journey is Lake Manasarovar. This is a sacred lake near Mount Kailash, and many people believe it is one of the holiest lakes in the world. Pilgrims often take a holy bath here and do prayers by the shore. The clear blue water and peaceful surroundings make it a very special place to visit. After finishing the Kailash Kora and visiting Lake Manasarovar, travelers drive back the same way. If the journey started in Lhasa, people return there, and if it started in Kathmandu, they return through Kerung to reach Nepal’s capital. The trip ends back in Kathmandu with beautiful memories of mountains, lakes, and spiritual experiences.

The best time to do the Kailash Tour is from May to September. During these months, the weather is more favorable, and the path is easier to travel. Since the area is very high in altitude, travelers need to be careful. Proper acclimatization and medical advice are important for a safe journey. During the tour, accommodations are simple but sufficient. On the trek around Kailash, people usually stay in teahouses or small camps. In larger towns like Kathmandu and Lhasa, hotels offer more comfort. Permits are also needed to enter the restricted area of Mount Kailash, and these are arranged before the tour begins.

Why book with Heaven Himalaya?

Many people say that the Kailash tour feeds the soul, tests the spirit, and gives a lifetime of positive memories. Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are known as one of the most important pilgrimage sites, called tirtha sthal, where pilgrims of different religions come every year.

From Kathmandu or Lhasa, the Kailash tour usually takes 13 to 16 days. On the way, travelers see beautiful landscapes, high mountains, free-flowing rivers, and even spend a night at the Everest Base Camp in some itineraries. This journey is filled with natural beauty as well as spiritual transformation.

Every year, thousands of travelers from Nepal and other countries join the Kailash tour. For many, this is a lifetime journey that brings peace to the mind and blessings to the soul. The Kailash trek is not only for pilgrims and devotees but also for adventure seekers who want to feel the magic of the Himalayas. Hindus believe Mount Kailash is the home of Lord Shiva. Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers also see it as holy. Even Christians believe that Kailash is the center of the universe. Because of this, the mountain is respected by people from many different religions.

There are different routes to reach Mount Kailash. The most popular is the Kathmandu to Kailash tour via Gyirong, which is the easiest and most accessible way. This route passes through stunning landscapes and quiet villages. Other routes include tours from Lhasa and Simikot. It is important to know that climbing Mount Kailash is not allowed. The mountain is considered so holy that no one has ever climbed it, and it remains untouched.

Mount Kailash looks like a giant pyramid rising to the sky. Many pilgrims believe it is the gateway to heaven. Walking around the mountain, known as Kailash Parikrama or Kora, is believed to help people find Moksha (salvation). This makes the Kailash tour one of the most important and meaningful journeys in the world.

A sacred journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar is a mix of spirituality, natural beauty, and adventure. The treks are challenging but rewarding, and the landscapes are peaceful and breathtaking. For a safe, comfortable, and memorable Kailash tour, you can book your package with Heaven Himalaya, your reliable Kailash tour operator from Kathmandu and Lhasa. We proudly organize the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra for thousands of travelers every year.

An Unmatchable Nepalese to Tibetan Himalayan and Natural Views

The Kailash Mansarovar Tour by overland begins from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. At the start of the journey, travelers pass through green hills, forests, and terraced fields. The road feels alive with nature all around. As the vehicle moves higher, the snowy peak of Langtang Lirung shines brightly in the distance, making the view even more beautiful.

When crossing the border into Tibet, the scenery changes. The tall Shishapangma Mountain (8,027 m), the 14th highest peak in the world, appears on the horizon. Soon after, the journey enters Gyirong Valley, which is often called the “Valley of Happiness.” This valley is quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by green landscapes that bring a feeling of joy to every traveler.

On the way, there are also faraway views of Mount Everest (8,848 m), the highest mountain in the world. Even though you leave it behind, the sight of Everest remains unforgettable. From there, the path leads toward the holy Mount Kailash and the turquoise-blue Lake Manasarovar, the two main highlights of this journey.

Lake Manasarovar rests quietly on the vast Tibetan Plateau, surrounded by snowy mountain giants and wide open lands. The lake shines like a jewel under the sunlight, and its calm water makes it one of the most special and sacred places on the tour. The mix of green valleys, snowy mountains, and high-altitude deserts along the way makes the journey from Nepal to Tibet truly unmatched and full of wonder.

The Challenge, Adventure, and Achievement of Dolma La Pass

One of the most exciting and toughest parts of the Kailash Kora (the walk around Mount Kailash) is crossing the Dolma La Pass, which is the highest point of the journey at 5,636 meters. From here, you can see very close views of the sharp Rocky Mountains, glaciers, and high walls of the Himalayas. The place is decorated with colorful prayer flags that flutter in the wind, giving it a magical and spiritual feeling.

Walking to Dolma La Pass is not easy. The path has both steep climbs and descents. Even though the trail itself is not very hard, the high altitude makes breathing more difficult. That is why it is significant to walk slowly, drink enough water, and stay careful so that you don’t get sick from the thin air (known as mountain sickness).

Once you reach the top, the view is breathtaking. Just below the pass, there is the holy Gauri Kund Lake, a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by rocks and snow. This lake adds even more beauty and spirituality to the journey. Many people believe it is a sacred place, and seeing it feels very special.

Every step toward Dolma La Pass is a test of patience and strength, but also a gift of discoveries. When you finally cross it, you feel a great sense of achievement and adventure. The challenge of Dolma La Pass makes the Kailash Mansarovar Tour by overland unforgettable and deeply meaningful.

Best Time for Kailash Tour

The best time to visit Mount Kailash is April to mid-October. This is when the weather is good, the roads are open, and the skies are clear. This trip is recommended for people aged 15 and above. If you cannot do the 14-day tour, there is also a shorter 10-day tour. The tour is an overland trip, meaning you drive in and drive out, starting and ending in Kathmandu or Lhasa.

Cultural and Historical Insight of Nepal and Tibet

The Kailash Mansarovar Tour by Overland is not just about mountains and lakes. It also gives you a chance to learn about the culture and history of both Nepal and Tibet. In Nepal, the journey begins from the Kathmandu Valley, a place that has at least seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include old temples, palaces, and stupas, many of which are more than 2,000 years old. Each monument tells the story of the valley’s rich past, where kings, artists, and saints left their mark.

As you move towards Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar through the Rasuwa-Kerung border, you pass through small villages that still keep their old traditions alive. People here follow both Hinduism and Buddhism, living together peacefully. Seeing this harmony makes travelers feel that these two religions are deeply connected.

On the way, the trail follows part of the ancient Silk Road, the famous trade route that once connected Nepal, Tibet, and many faraway lands. In Tibet, the Gyirong Valley welcomes you with its deep Buddhist culture, where you can see monasteries, prayer wheels, and sacred sites. The area is also home to nomadic people, who live a simple life, moving with their animals across the high mountains.

All of these experiences make the Kailash journey not only spiritual but also a living history lesson. It connects you to the timeless traditions, practices, and cultures that have shaped the lands of Nepal and Tibet for thousands of years.

  • Truly Exceptional Trekking Experience with Heaven Himalayas

I rarely write public reviews, but our experience with Heaven Himalayas was so exceptional that I felt compelled to share it. My husband, 19-year-old daughter, and I recently travelled to Nepal and completed the Annapurna Base Camp Circuit trek — our first trek and first time in Nepal.

After doing extensive research comparing itineraries, inclusions, and costs, we chose Heaven Himalayas — and we’re so glad we did. From the very beginning, Ram was incredibly patient and responsive, answering all my pre-trip questions (and there were many!) about everything from sleeping bags and e-sims to mosquito spray.
When we arrived in Nepal, Ram personally greeted us at the airport and provided a thorough trek briefing. We were then introduced to our guide, Shankar, whose professionalism and warmth immediately put us at ease. He helped us catch an earlier flight to Pokhara, sorted all logistics smoothly, and introduced us to Porzo, our wonderful porter.

Throughout the trek, Shankar and Porzo took exceptional care of us. We always felt safe, supported, and comfortable to go at our own pace. Shankar handled everything — organising meals, giving us daily tips on what to expect and what to wear, and sharing his deep knowledge of the region and its culture. He’s a sincere, kind and genuine person. Porzo was also amazing; he made my family feel safe and looked after. He was always smiling, there to help and has a lovely presence.

This trip was incredibly special for our family. If you’re considering trekking in Nepal, I wholeheartedly recommend getting in touch with Heaven Himalayas. Ram and his team are professional, knowledgable, responsive, flexible, and genuinely dedicated to making your experience unforgettable.

  • Warmest recommendation to our guide

We are a couple from Denmark who have long wanted to go The Manaslu Circuit. In this connection, we reached out to one of our friends who recommended Prem. They had gone to Manaslu together a few years ago and he put us in touch. From the first contact Prem has been super professional and he has been very attentive to our needs and wishes for the trip. When we arrived in Kathmandu, Prem picked us up at the airport and walked us to the hotel. Our trip started on our 3rd holiday and everything was very organized and we felt completely safe throughout the trip. Prem guided us over Larke Pass in the best way, and we are incredibly happy to have shared such a great experience with him. In connection with our return journey, Prem came to our hotel and he accompanied us to the airport and wished us a safe journey.

Apart from organizing our trip to Manaslu, Prem has reached out and been extremely helpful throughout our 6 week journey.

We will thus give him our warmest recommendations!

  • Solo trekk to Annapurna Base Camp

I did the Annapurna Base Camp hike in mid-November, and Heaven Himalaya made the entire experience smooth and stress-free. Booking was easy, and their responses on WhatsApp were always prompt and helpful.

As a solo female traveler, I appreciated how well everything was organized. They helped me with gear selection, forex exchange, and every small detail. When I arrived in Kathmandu, all logistics were taken care of, including airport transfers and trail arrangements. I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

My guide, Surya, was amazing. With over 15 years of experience, he knew the trails inside out and ensured everything was taken care of. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and he addressed all my concerns with ease.

I finished the trail quicker than expected, and they were flexible enough to adjust my bookings and logistics without any hassle. Their willingness to accommodate changes made the trip even more enjoyable.

Price-wise, they’re in line with the market, but their response time and ability to customize based on individual needs really stood out.

Difficulty of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (14 Days)

The Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is a challenging journey for both your body and mind. It is a long and high-altitude trip, but improvements in roads and accommodations have made it easier than before.

The hotels up to Saga and Darchen are comfortable, and guesthouses during the Kora (circumambulation) are clean and warm. There may be limited toilets and hot water, but local food is good, so you don’t need to carry too much dry food.

The roads are broad, smooth, and well-paved, making travel by bus or jeep comfortable. Even long mountain passes are manageable, and you will have enough time for photos and sightseeing.

During the three-day Kailash Kora, you can choose to walk, ride a horse, or ride a yak. The main challenge is the high altitude and unpredictable weather. Altitude sickness is common, so proper acclimatization is vital.

The second day of the Kora is the toughest, with a long trek and steep paths. Some travelers may need supplemental oxygen. However, with careful planning, taking breaks, and following guidance, most people can complete the pilgrimage safely and enjoy the spiritual journey.

Who is Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour For?

The Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour is a 14-day journey that is stimulating but possible for many people with different fitness levels and health conditions.

This tour is designed for faithful travelers aged 18 to 75 years. Over the years, we have guided young travelers, adults, and even people in their seventies to the holy Mount Kailash. Some may feel mild altitude sickness, but most pilgrims complete the journey effortlessly and enjoyably.

If you are physically and mentally healthy, this tour is suitable for you. Our experienced team in Nepal and Tibet will take care of your well-being throughout the trip. During the Kailash Parikrama, our Tibetan guide can also provide horses or porters if you prefer.

Health Requirements, Preparation, and Training. Your health is imperative for this journey. People with serious heart, kidney, or lung problems should consult a doctor before joining, because the high altitude may increase risks. For fitness preparation, you can do light exercises like walking, stair climbing, or stretching. If you are already active, jogging or running will help.

Mental preparation is also significant. Be ready to work with the team, adapt to basic comfort, and enjoy the spiritual experience. Reading about Kailash and watching videos of the journey can help you know what to expect. For a harmless and memorable experience, trust Heaven Himalaya, your reliable tour operator for Kailash Mansarovar.

Acclimatization for Mountain Altitude Sickness

During the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour, most of the trip is by private vehicle, except for the three-day Kailash Parikrama trek. By the fifth day, you will reach around 3,000 meters, and by the seventh day, you will sleep above 4,500 meters.

Since driving to high altitude is faster than walking, the risk of altitude sickness is higher. To help your body adjust, we spend a few days in Kathmandu, take a rest day in Kerung, and make a short drive from Lake Mansarovar to Darchen.

Some travelers may feel mild headaches, chest tightness, or body aches. Medicines like Diamox or Ibuprofen can help. If you have trouble breathing, the guide will check your condition and provide oxygen if needed.

In rare cases, the trip may need to be stopped, or you may need to descend to a lower altitude. To prevent sickness, rest for a few hours before going out, and drink plenty of fluids from Kerung onwards. This helps your body adjust safely to the high mountains. For a safe and comfortable journey, trust Heaven Himalaya, your experienced tour operator for Kailash Mansarovar.

Accommodation, Meals, and Drink

As part of the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour by Heaven Himalaya, you will enjoy comfortable accommodation throughout your journey. In Kathmandu, you will stay in a pleasant three-star hotel with double rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers. During the drive to Syabrubesi, a cozy lodge will provide a comfortable place to rest, and in Tibet, up to Darchen, we arrange stays in very nice and comfortable hotels. At Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk, travelers will sleep in clean, well-managed government shelters or monastery guesthouses, which are arranged in a hostel-style format. A warm bed will always be provided, and if necessary, our team can set up a comfortable tent for sleeping.

For meals, a full vegetarian board is provided throughout the tour, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, though drinks are not included. The food is varied and delicious, with menus in Darchen highlighting Chinese and Tibetan flavors, while the guesthouses in Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk serve tasty local dishes. Yogurts and a wide variety of vegetarian options are available, and all supermarkets up to Saga are stocked with fresh fruits and international foods. Travelers who may be concerned about their stomachs can rest assured that safe and hygienic food options are always available during the journey.

Transportation

Throughout the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour, all travel arrangements are provided in spacious tourist vehicles suited to your group size, including options like cars, jeeps, vans, or buses. This service covers airport transfers, the journey from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, Kerung, and Saga, as well as travel to Tarboche and the return from Darchen to Kathmandu via Kerung. Please note that the cost of hiring horses or porters for the Kailash Parikrama is not included in the package; however, our guides will assist with arrangements and local negotiations as needed.

Communication and Network/Internet

To stay connected with your family and friends throughout the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour, it is recommended to use local SIM cards rather than roaming on your home network, which helps reduce communication costs. In Kathmandu, you can easily purchase Namaste or NCELL SIM cards, while in Kerung, SIM cards from China Unicom, China Telecom, or China Mobile are available. Both Nepal and China also offer eSIMs, which are virtual SIM cards that can be activated online. Nepalese networks provide 4G service, whereas Chinese networks allow access to 5G internet. WiFi is available in most hotels in Nepal and Tibet, but guesthouses in the Kailash region may have unreliable connectivity. If you plan to access social media or Western websites, it is advisable to use a VPN, as many sites are blocked by the Chinese government.

Rules and Regulations

Here are the Rules and Regulations for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour in clear bullet points:

  • The trip must be arranged through a registered Nepali travel agency; unofficial intermediaries are not allowed.
  • In Tibet, you must be accompanied by a licensed local guide, private vehicle, and driver.
  • An official Tibet travel permit is required to enter Tibet.
  • The tour should be booked 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
  • Travelers must provide a passport and photographs when confirming the trip.
  • Photograph requirements: 51 mm x 51 mm, plain white background, natural look (no makeup, no glasses).
  • Passport requirements: valid for at least 6 months, with 2 to 3 blank pages for visa stamps.

Essential Permits and Visa for Kailash Mansarovar Tour

For the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour, the procedure of securing permits and visas is an essential step to ensure a smooth and legal journey. The first requirement is the Chinese Group Visa, which allows entry into Tibet from Nepal. This visa is obtained through the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu and can only be processed by a registered tour operator, such as our company. Along with the visa, every traveler must have a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), issued by the Tourism Office of Tibet. This permit contains detailed information about the traveler, including their itinerary, hotel bookings, and the dates of arrival and departure, and once issued, the travel plans cannot be changed.

For the Kailash tour specifically, there are three additional permits required: the Military Permit, the Alien Travel Permit, and the Foreign Affairs Permit. These permits are handled by our Tibetan travel partner and are necessary for visiting restricted areas around Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. Travelers need to submit a passport copy and recent photographs (51 mm × 51 mm, plain white background, no makeup or glasses) to our team well in advance. The travel partner submits these documents to the Tourism Office of Tibet, which then issues an official invitation letter. This letter is critical for obtaining the Chinese Group Visa.

The Tibet Travel Permit typically takes 10–15 working days to process. Our Tibetan guide carries all the permits during the trip to ensure smooth access to restricted areas and checkpoints. Without these permits, travelers are not allowed to enter Tibet or visit sacred sites like Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, making the preparation and submission process a vital part of the journey. Proper planning and timely submission of all documents guarantee a hassle-free experience for all pilgrims.

Chinese Group Visa

To obtain the Chinese Group Visa for the Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour organized by Heaven Himalaya, each member of the group must personally visit the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. At the embassy, travelers will provide their fingerprints, photographs, and original passports as part of the application process.

There are two processing options for the Group Visa. The standard option takes four working days and costs USD 175 for U.S. nationals, while travelers of other nationalities typically pay between USD 70 and USD 170. The express option is faster, taking three working days, with costs ranging from USD 90 to USD 180 per person, depending on nationality.

Since the embassy is closed on weekends, Heaven Himalaya advises all travelers to arrive in Kathmandu on a weekday morning to ensure timely submission. Once the visa is processed, the team will collect it from the embassy and distribute the original passports to the travelers.

It is important to note that the Chinese Group Visa is issued for all members together, meaning everyone in the group must enter and exit Tibet together. This ensures compliance with Chinese regulations and guarantees a smooth journey for the entire Kailash Mansarovar Overland Tour.
