Inside Guide to Mera Peak

Everything you need to know about Mera Peak

Mera Peak is located in the Mahalangur range of the Neapalese Himalayas and classified as a trekking peak. It contains three main summits: Mera North, Mera Central and Mera South It lies at an elevation of (6,461m/ 21,190 ft) above sea level.

It was first ascent by J.O.M. Roberts, Sen Tenzing Sherpa in May 20, 1953.

The Mera Peak journey is an 18-day adventure filled with excitement and high-altitude challenges. The expedition begins in Kathmandu, followed by a scenic 35-minute flight to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail leads through Paiya, Panggom, Ningsow, Kothe, and Thaknak, gradually ascending through the remote landscapes of the Lower Khumbu.

As this is a high-altitude climb, proper acclimatization is essential. We acclimatize at Khare (5,045 m / 16,552 ft) to help the body adjust before the summit push. After acclimatization, we begin our summit preparations.

Weather conditions in the Himalayas are unpredictable, so a contingency day is included in the itinerary. This allows flexibility in case of unfavorable weather or the need for additional acclimatization, ensuring a safer and more successful climb.

It is often claimed as the highest trekking peak in Nepal and it's permit also is relatively easy to get. You can’t underestimate 6461m. Technically it's not so difficult but if the weather fails it’s hard for even professionals.

At high altitudes, breathing can be difficult, but with proper acclimatization, keeping hydrated, and eating well, the body can recover and adjust to the altitude. After leaving Mera Base Camp, the real alpine challenge begins, with much of the climbing taking place on steep ice and snow surfaces. To get to high camp, you’ll have to walk for 4-6 hours.

Since the snow slopes do not exceed 30 degrees, Mt. Mera Peak does not require professional peak climbing experience. There will be fixed ropes and fixed lines to keep you secure. During the climb to the top, you will be following the climbing Sherpa’s orders and footsteps.

And finally, as the saying goes, “The juice is worth the squeeze.” All the effort is rewarded with truly majestic views of the Himalayan ranges. From the summit of Mera Peak, climbers are treated to breathtaking 360-degree panoramic vistas of five mountains over 8,000 meters: Mount Everest (8,848 m), Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), and Cho Oyu (8,201 m), along with countless other iconic peaks of the Khumbu region.
